How long to upload photos?

How long does it take to upload photos to smugmug. I know it probably depends on your internet connection, computer, and file size. But mine just seems to long. I have wireless internet, fairly high speed, a newer laptop computer, and 10 megapixal files. It takes at least 6 hours for 100 photos. Is this normal?

It depends entirely upon the upload speed of your home internet connection and the size of your images.

My DSL connection has a rated upload speed of 384 kbps (kilobits per second) which, in reality, performs at about 320kbps which is 40 KBps (kilobytes per second). At that speed a 3MB image takes about 77 seconds so I can upload about 46 images per hour. With 6MB images, it would be 23 images per hour.

You can affect the image size by what you choose for JPEG compression. I upload all my JPEGs with JPEG compression level 10 or 85%. JPEG compression level 12 will be three times as large with no noticable difference in quality in viewing or in print.
