Why is my site running so slow???

My home page slideshow is now slow to load, gallery thumbs are now slow to load (I can see on bottom...21 photos remaining 20 remaining..etc.) I'm literally reading a book between clicks.
Other sites (granted not so many images to load) are running fine.
I have over 1200 photos and over 5 GB is space used. Is that part of the problem???
