switchers

I was at my local camera store this weekend, and I saw something that I just couldn't understand. A man was in the process of selling ALL of his camera equiptment (mostly Nikon) to the camera store and making the switch to Canon.

His camera body was Nikon D300 so at least the camera body was fairly new.

But I question how much this guy new about what he was doing. The guy at the camera store had to keep telling him that his filters will work on Nikon or Canon so he didn't need to sell those.

I'm not trying to start a Canon vs. Nikon debate, but just trying to understand the mindset of all the people who (with fairly new equiptment) make the switch one way or the other. To me it seems like one year Nikon is on top, the next its Canon. Selling everything and switching seems like a big loss of money. :scratch

Nothing about C vs N here, but why the heck would someone sell it to a camera store???

My camera store actually said "yeah, we buys stuff, but you get a better deal if you sell it to a pawn shop" rolleyes1.gif

Wow where is your pawn shops....here you won't get over $75 for a nearly new digital slr even with original sales receipt......but ebay is another matter....for me it would have to be the flea market to start withmwink.gifwink

What I am wondering is what did he replace a D300 with from Canon....if he went into the 1D line okay....but he had a camera with proven High ISO greatness and built in GPS ability thru a cable connected GPD unit.....
Canon told me flat out that they have no desire to addthis to their line up and if I really needed GPS ability I should look into Nikons upper end....2.5 yrs agop in an email....could not believe it.

I've just read it time and time again on the forums (here too), where someone says I'm selling all my ________ (insert brand) and buying all _________ (insert other brand). I always thought this was just some troll, but then I saw the guy actually selling his stuff...and at a camera store!? Even the sales guy was giving him a "your not too smart" look.

There are a lot of people with a lot of money & no idea of what they are doing & too ignorant to be told. It could just be that simple.

Either that or he wants to take better photos.

He must have caught wind of the upcoming 5DII in a few months. :D

Well, I can think of a number of reasons, but about the only one that seems somewhat reasonable is that he had a bad experience with Nikon customer support and got so pissed that he wants nothing to do with them any more. Not saying that's rational, but it is at least understandable. I think I might have asked him, just out of curiosity.

Sounds to me like he's transferring blame for his poor photography skills to his equipment.

Geezus. I am happy with my Canon system, but if I had a D300 I would be proud to own and use it! I agree that there must have been an irrational reason for his action.

I have a pro friend who switched $25K of nikon gear to canon when the 1DSmk2 was only 6 months old, he kept some hard to find lenses but also has a few other cameras of other formats. He sold most of it privately to our group of friends for fairly good prices for both parties.

Another friend who was considering doing the same thing, shoots for my work on supplied canon gear (a 1ds mk3 and a 1ds mk2) but his own gear is all Nikon. He's been slowly buying the odd canon lens ( 24 tse, 8mm etc) with an eye to switching but now the D3 has him totally torn. Last lunar eclipse he cranked out his crazy Nikon 800mm f/5.6 but we both shot through it using an adapter and canon cameras.

So that's two switchers I know off, both have more then enough money to throw around on glass and bodies but unlike the guy you speak of, both have more sense then to sell it to a camera shop.
