Canon RAW+JPEG

Hi folks, I have a new 40D that I am slowly becoming friends with. One issue however. Last time out I shot in RAW+JPEG. The way I understand it is that for each image taken it saves it in both RAW and JPEG. However, when I downloaded the images and opened them up in DPP, the RAW files were not present, instead it saved 2 JPEGS of each image.
Am I doing something wrong here?:scratch
Thanks, Vince

Dial to RAW+L press set again? This is how it is with the 30D.
I'm assuming the menu didn't change much with the 40D.
Are you reformatting the CF after each time you clear it of photos?
If this ain't it I have no clue what the problem might be. Fortunately,
there are much brighter folks around. Michael
Your understanding of RAW+JPG is correct. How did you download the images to your computer?
Are you on a PC? When I load up my CF card (I shoot RAW+JPG) on a PC it shows as two JPG files if the machine is set up to hide extensions. The camera did record a raw and a jpg but Windows doesn't know how to handle raw files on its own so it says "hey, this might an image, so i'll use a JPG icon". At least that is my experiance.
If you are using Linux, I have no clue.
If you are using Mac - before I installed the update to Lightroom and Bridge I was seeing a similar issue, but I could still open up the raw files in Preview they just looked strange.
The RAW file extension is .CR2
after install the codec then you can see the raw file in the thumbnail.

I think I give Canon a call. Any other ideas?

BTW (and I'm sure you know this), it is impossible for two files to have the same filename AND extension. This is what causes me to believe that DPP is confusing the issue for you...

are they both the same size? :cry

Have had the same problem; after downloading images from my 40d with a usb onto my imac with canon's digital photo professional, to my astonishment I found (only much later) out that ALL images had become jpg's with approximately the same (small) size - one picture retained the original name, the other one got the same name with a "_2" added; is there any way in which I could recover the information in the raw files? What went wrong?
Since, I am only taking pictures in raw.
Thank you so much for your assistance!

Canon 30D, some lenses and stuff... I think im tired or something, i have a hard time concentrating.. hey look, a birdie!:clap
Thanks, Mariette
Mariette, welcome to the Digital Grin.
I never shoot RAW+JPG because I know that I can always get a JPG from the RAW in post.
Might I suggest that you segregate the RAW files from the JPGs in separate folders/subdirectories immediately after you bring the files into the computer and before you start your image processing and editing. That should avoid conflicts with your software as well as provide better organization of the files and safeguard the original JPGs.
