Best lens for indoor sports?

on a 40D body.

I want to use the new lens for youth basketball and also youth football (night time games with sideline access)
Last season I used the 85mm f/1.8 and found it a bit short and IQ not up to par.

I have the 200mm f/2.8L which is fabulous for baseball, but I find it to be too long for indoor sports.

Reading reviews, the 135mm f/2 L seems like a slam dunk, but I just wanted to bounce the idea here to see if there are any reasons why I should NOT buy this lens.

Thanks in advance.

I use both the 70-200 f/2.8 IS and the 135 f/2.0 for my indoor sports.

I love both, but the 135mm is just something special.

I've got a 28-70/2.8 and an 80-200/2.8 (both courtesy of eBay - Nikon glass is expensive). I primarily use the 80-200 for my son's baseball (although it's sometimes a bit too short for across the field or outfield shots). I almost exclusively use the 28-70 for my daughter's volleyball. I'm not sure what you're shooting indoors (basketball?) but getting much over the 100mm range for volleyball tends to force you to be a ways back from the court (and makes it all the worse given the already typically poor lighting).

    Hope that helps.
Shootin' the kids (volleyball and baseball that is)!

    I use the 135mm F2.0 on a MkIII and I used to shoot it on a 20D.

I shoot a lot of hockey, a lot of low light theater work, and some indoor track.

This lens is just awesome. Tack sharp and fast.

I have shot with the 70-200mm, and to be honest, I don't think it comes close to my 135mm F2.0, or my 200mm F2.8 for sharpness, etc.

This is a great portrait lens, and a great indoor sports lens.

    IMHO.

    Peace,
    Bob
