After a trip to Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge near Cambridge, Maryland we stopped to see the Spocott post windmill.



Once a self-contained community, Spocott today has the only existing post-type Dutch windmill for grinding grain in Maryland. The post windmill can be turned into the wind by the tailpole which is attached to the back of the mill. The miller pushes the tailpole with his shoulder and slowly walks in a circle until the mill faces into the wind.

Huh I was just in the NL and saw a couple of windmills but I've lived in MD for 10 years and didn't know we had any here!!

This was a really awesome educational experience for me. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for looking ... hope to go back when the mill is in operation and the light is better ...
