Momma has been coming around the yard for the last 4 years. Several years ago she showed up with toddlers in tow. I am told that it's unusual for them to have 3 cubs. Not very good photos (P&S since the D80 battery was run down).
First Momma approached to check things out.
At first the kids hung back.
OK kids it's safe.
Bruno was the first to venture forth.
Allright we're done. Let's go home.
Now to clean up the mess!

At first I thought how cool to have a bear w/cubs to come by to visit...then I thought how scary to have a bear w/cubs come to visit, .

Definitely through an open window. I've been within 15-20 feet of adult bears in the yard (one at a time!) but not when cubs are around. Though I wonder if the maternal instinct to protect diminishes as the cubs age. These three are like a lot of young people today being reluctant to leave the nest.

Thanks Stephen. When I first moved to this area 7 years ago and started getting visits every spring from Black Bears, I stopped in a store catering to what some around here call "tree huggers" and picked up a pamphlet entitled "How to live with our friends the Bears". The advice was to carry a whistle, blow it, wave your arms, and jump up and down. Let me tell you from experience, when a bear has it's mind set on a bird feeder or garbage pail, it is not impressed by those actions much less frightened!
