The Dave Hill effect is detailed here:

Thanks to Michael Kirk for turning me on to this cool effect. I've been having some fun this morning playing with it with a few of my favorite shots. It definitely works better with some than with others. I'm attaching a few that I think take best advantage of it.

THe 1st and 3rd photos are awesome. Really showing motion and action. Very good captures.
Thanks for sharing.

On Lightroom Killer Tips, there was a similar video and free presets:

I think this preset overdoes it a bit, but give it a try
Don't know why. But it does. Maybe it's the solitary nature of the shot?
I found I needed to customize this effect for each photo to get the right look--it couldn't be totally automated. In about 90% of the photos I tried this with, I found I didn't want anything near 100% fill light, as it says in the instructions on the web page. That was way too much, unless I was missing something else.
That second shot is my friend Phil MacFarlane competing in a singlehanded ocean race last year.
No, in that case it was one of the Singlehanded Sailing Society races to the Farallones or the Lightship buoy or something... I can't recall now exactly which one.
Wait 'til July this year! We'll have several days with racers departing under the Gate bound for Hawaii.
I guess it's time to go find a Latitude 38 for the dates
Yep! Of course, the calendar is online too, at latitude38.com.
