Where is ACR storing image settings?

I'm editing a bunch of jpgs using Bridge > ACR > PSCS3. I normally shoot Raw and the image settings for these are stored as .xmp files in the same folder as the raw files. With the jpgs though, there are no .xmp files. In Preferences I have "Save image settings in sidecar .xmp files" selected. So where is ACR storing the image settings?

I think they're embedded in the file itself. ACR edits in RAW requires a sidecar file or datebase for maintaining edits because it's file structure does not support an embedded profile. JPEGs do.

The metadata for rendered images is embedded in the document.
