    Hey Gus,

A couple of months ago, a few people @ STF were talking about a B&W conversion technique by a photographer Greg Gorman.

Here's some info about the technique...
    http://www.gormanphotography.com/bw_conversion.pdf

And here's a photoshop action for this method...

I have tried since I use the gimp, so I can't tell you how good it is, but maybe it's worth a try.

    Cheers,

    the fm plugin works great.
    but so does

    new adj layer (channel mixer)
    50%, 50%, 0, check the monochrome box
    flatten
now do a curves adjustment for contrast (you'd do this anyhow)

    or

set your 20d to raw + jpg, and change the parameters to bw. set contrast and sharpness to 1 notch higher than normal. you'll have the raw (for color if you want) and bw straight from the camera (it looks great..)

    cheers mate

Actually on channel mixer, with some pictures it pays off to adjust all three with monochrome selected, and make sure that the total stays somewhere around 100 (+/- 10). Depending on color information, it sometimes even works sending one of the channels into negative while enhancing the others.
On my pics pending what I see I at times skip the curves and layers simply by manipulating the values in channel mixer.
