SmugNDrag: automate creating blog image links

bziclixbziclix Registered Users Posts: 20 Big grins
I'd like to announce SmugNDrag, a blog link automator. Unlike the Share feature of SmugMug, SmugNDrag generates a link which not only embeds the image in the blog entry but also creates the appropriate link click-through to the image in the SmugMug gallery. I was doing this by hand, SmugNDrag is much faster and easier.

I blogged about it here (using SmugNDrag).

It's available here. It's currently available for Macs running 10.5.x+.

thanks, brian

Doesn't appear to be doing anything for me. I've got the latest version, and I've tried it using both Firefox 3 and Safari 3. I've tried dragging a direct link to the photo, as well as the URL displayed while browsing the gallery at the photo. I've even tried dragging the direct photo, and the photo displayed in the gallery.

Am I missing something? Running OSX 10.5.4

Navigate to the photo in your gallery for which you want to generate a URL. Grab the url in the browser window (essentially the favicon) and drag it to SmugNDrag's "Drag an Image URL Here" box. Now paste and the URL link should appear in your document.

    thanks, brian

    Say what?
So can you break it down for those of us who are painfully slow? I would like to add a blog to my website but I'll be the first to admit I am a little computer slow. I downloaded the program but when I click on the icon nothing happens. It does look nice down on my dashboard but would be great if I could use it for the designed purpose! Any ideas what I did wrong?

    Hi Tamara,
You need to set up your blog first, check out this thread by Denise:-
    http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=101262
Its in the customization forum. Once you've got a blog then you can use SmugNDrag to easily display images from SmugMug on your blog that link back to your site.
BTW the link in your signature doesn't work :-(

    Cheers,
    Caroline

That's what I was trying, but not working. Are you saying when you drag it to the SmugNDrag window, that it automatically copies the URL, and you then command-V to paste it where you want?

If so, it would be nice to have at least some confirmation that it actually did anything. When dragging the URL it would just spring right back to the address bar, as if nothing happened, and as if nothing could happen with that particular action. No clue that it was copying the info to the 'clipboard'.

Ok, just tried the drag, then paste. It does work. So like I said some confirmation that it actually did anything would be nice :) Thanks for a very handy app though, in any case!

    Hi Caroline,
I have a blog set-up and attached to my website but still am at a loss for how smugNdrag works. I don't have a window that opens up for me to enter urls or anything. I have a cute little lens icon that doesn't do anything and a zip file that produces more cute little lens icons that don't do anything when clicked. Any clues as to where I went astray?
My sig link should work now, by the way. Thanks!

    Hi Tamara,
If you are not getting a window open for you I think you need to see what Brian has to say - You are on a Mac aren't you ? this doesn't work for windows :-(

    SmugNDrag
I've down loaded SmugNDrag and placed it on my hard drive under apps but when I click the icon I get nothing. Any suggestions? I went to the apple store and did it on one of their macs and it worked fine, is there something in my computer settings maybe not working with SmugNdrag?

What version of the OS and mac are you using? I've only tested it on Intel-based, Leopard running machines.

Easy enough to add. I'll get a new version soon. I'm *almost* ready to push a new version of pysmug so that comes first.
