The East Indiaman Götheborg (good gaggle of piccies :)

We have a special visitor in Helsinki this week. She's a beauty.



This is a replica 1700s East Indiaman called Götheborg. The original belonged to the Swedish East India Company and carried tea, silk, spices and porcelain from China to Sweden. Built in 2005 in Sweden and with a voyage to China and back to her credit, we got to see her during the Baltic Sea tour. Three masts with square rigging, and period materials through out.

She arrived with some fanfare carrying prince Carl Philip of Sweden.




The show starts at Kustaanmiekka as the lead vessels Falken and Gladan sail in.




Götheborg arrives and Anne waves a hello.






The group of boats and Finnish sail ships escorting Götheborg was huge! We had the poor ship practically surrounded. No escaping until we've all had a good romp around the decks.




The SAR-boats set up a show with the water cannons. And ended up giving the prince a spray

As you can see the whole thing is made of wood and ropes.

The heaviest ones are mast supports, and then there's sheet lines, halyards, whatsits and dunnos. I hope the sailors know what they all do...

We had some nice old maps to look for places to hide the ship in for a while:



In the end we decided to leave in peace, we counted three of us and 80 of them.

The craftsmen who built her have outdone themselves. There wasn't a board or line out of place, and everything looked good as new after three years on the sea - that's already an incredible job sailing and maintaining the ship.
