Another eagle from my trip last week. This was the fullest frame shot all weekend. Not the greatest position in the world but the detail is pretty good with a decent BG.

Nikon D200/Sigma 100-300 f4
1/1000s f/10.0 at 195.0mm iso500
PP: levels, USM, shadows/highlights, cloned some errant feathers
cropped away about 30% mainly bottom and left

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Thanks for the comments, folks. The reality is that the quality of any individual shot I take is still largely luck as to how it turns out. Which makes it extremely frustrating because some of the best action sequences etc. I totally blow it. Then when I least expect it, like this shot, I just throw the camera up and... voila. What I am doing right is finding the opportunities. A lifetime of hunting, fishing, and just wildlife watching have taken care of that. But these guys are hard to get a decent exposure on. The contrast between their dark bodies and white heads and tails presents a challenge. So far when they're flying I've pretty much been setting exposure based on ambient light with a bias towards underexposure. Static subjects I do OK on but I'm still new at this bird stuff so if anyone has any words of wisdom, recommended reading, etc. I'd appreciate a reply or a PM.
