Thoughts and Suggestions

Would like thoughts, suggestions and pointers on converting photos. Some B&W conversions I see are awesome and some are yuck. I cannot seem to ever get the awesome ones. I guess it's the balance and light and dark that I'm missing? Anyway, here are some for critique and suggestions please.

I like 1 the best. 3 could work if the background was contrasted so you don't lose his face. 2 and 4 do nothing for me.
