How does Lightroom decide on suspected duplicates?

So I'm importing a bunch of stuff into the LR 2 beta (I'm evaluating some other things, but currently leaning towards LR). LR keeps finding duplicates (not a surprise since I've checked the "Don't re-import suspected duplicates" check box, and I know I've got a bunch of duplicates I have to clean up).
Still, I'm getting more than I expected, so I decided to run a test. I made some copies of unimported images like this:
When I import the parent folder, it imports five out of the six (both copies of Image B and three out of four copies of Image A). Which, uh, strikes me as a little weird. Now, it is a beta, but I didn't think this was an area they were working on. (Although it's nice to see they're more likely to import something twice rather than not at all--I obviously need to figure out what I've got on my disks.)
And if anybody wants to send me a beta invite, my email address is my user name at gmail.com.:D
