Rules for good portraiture...

Not as comprehensive as some, but I keep a cheatsheet with some of the rules (how to deemphasize something, etc.) on a card in my bag. I don't do much classical portraiture (would like to do more, but barely have the time for the stuff I do get done) so a quick set of rules (vs. a long treatise (going to read the long treatise posted below too) really helps me when I do get a chance to shoot some staged portraits.

There used to be an html version i thought I'd cut and paste, but now there is only the .pdf. It's a lot of side by side shots that show a photo using the rules vs. one without. things like putting a small wedge under the rear situated buttock to give a sense of leaning in and intimacy...you can see in the photos.
And there are other tutorials and resources here that are good reads.
