what to charge for a single image being used in an ad campaign

A woman called yesterday and wants to use this image as part of an ad campaign, but I have no idea who much to charge her....what would you charge? :dunno

You need to consider how long the photo will be used in the campaign and to what extent before you can evaluate what the price should be.

See if you can poke around and find out what istock and other stock agencies charge customers for something like that . Maybe that would help out. If you can find the pricing there.

Stock agencies don't tend to charge that much. Not enough that I would sell an image for their pricing model...unless you use the Getty Images pricing model.

For local businesses I charge $30 per use or per page.

For a national publication, I would charge $300...more for a cover image.

But seriously folks. Take a hundred for it per publication (not syndication) if it's local and not the neighborhood association monthly. If they ask where you came up with that tell them a daily in a cool Texas city pays something along that rate for assignment work or for a color news shot to use on the front page. (short-term exclusive, perpetual non-exclusive, all rights retained by photographer...btw)

Be knowledgeable about terms. This would be a sale for a short-term advertising exclusive use. Per publication? Per Month of exclusivity?

Don't sell your rights away. Just lease them out. Reallly.

It would be helpful if you could provide some marketing context around this for us.

somehow I think both you and Sam are failing to understand the significance of micro stock and what it can do for your career...but there is another thread for hashing this out.
