Exposure control using using a tilt/shift lens
I have a TS-E 45 lens. I am constantly fighting exposure problems with this lens in conjunction with the 580EX flash. I almost always use the camera (a 20D) in manual mode, and the flash set to ETTL and high-speed sync enabled.
With no tilt or shift the resultant photo looks o.k. as the camera's meter was fine and the flash is operating in fill flash.
However, when I shift the lens and use the camera's meter the flash will blow everything out. I find that I have to increase the shutter speed of the camera by 2 or more (sometimes 3 or more) stops in order to get a better exposure while still using the flash. Sometime I also have to decrease the power of the flash by 2 or 3 stops, too.
What is the best way to control exposure correctly when tilting or shifting the lens without having to take a 2 or more shots to get it right?
