My favourite hoverfly

Used to be Myathropa florae but this hoverfly Volucella zonaria took over last year About 20mm body length - hard to fit in at 1:1.

Love that last shot in particular, do they have a clear plate between their eyes? the area over the face looks like it has a shine to it.

Phil can only say I always get a few in the garden, AFAIK they are not rare.

Skippy - the gap between the eyes means this is a female.
