category update date vs gallery update date

I added a new gallery with new photos to one of my existing categories, but the category's update date didn't change. Some friends look for new photos by navigating to my home page and scanning the update dates, so I'd like the categories to change their update date whenever galleries inside them change. Is there a way to have this happen automatically? Failing that, how do I get a category's update date to change manually?

I'll note that the galleries I have are not set to "clean" --- i.e. they do display the update dates as well, so that's not the issue.

Currently, the category date is the date of the first gallery in the category.

Thanks! I'll just have to organize things reverse chronologically instead of chronologically.
