That's just one of the things I did wrong. I also didn't check my focus properly, (for a photographer, that's a sin!) and I framed too tightly. My first time. Oh well!

We have had a thread in the Technique forum about shooting fireworks displays.
The short story is low ISO ( 100 for Canon, or 200 for Nikon ), f8 or thereabouts - check your histogram after a few frames, camera in Manual mode with shutter speed of 2 - 10 seconds or so, focus set to Infinity and Autofocus turned completely off. A good tripod firmly mounted on solid ground ( I lost a few frames due to bridge movement when cars rolled across the bridge I was shooting from), and a cable release or a remote shutter release.. Be sure your batteries are fully charged, long shutter times eat up batteries more quickly.
Some of my shots can be seen here
