Remote vs Timer Switch

I'm looking at the Canon Remote Switch or the Timer Switch for my 40D.

I'm wonder tho....can the timer switch work like the remote...just focus and click manually or is the timer just that...a timer

If you are looking at the plain shutter release vs. the intervalometer, yes, the intervalometer can act as a plain old shutter release.

Just to make sure I'm correct in my understanding of this -- The Canon | Timer Remote Controller TC-80N3 | 2477A002 | B&H Photo will work the same as this one Canon | Remote Switch RS-80N3 | 2476A001 | B&H Photo Video only it has more options....right?

The timer remote is also called an intervalometer....why don't they just call it that? Wouldn't it be a lot simpler

If you look at pictures of them, they are essentially the same except the intervalometer has buttons and a screen for take shots at specific intervals. If you never touch the buttons for timing on the timer remote and only use the trigger, it will be the same as the cheaper shutter release. Depending on your camera, it may have an intervalometer built in, so you may not need the external one.
