Nikon 18-200 VR Problem

I have had a rather strange issue come up. While shooting my 18-200 VR on her D70 at an airshow on Friday, my wife complained that the VR had gone screwy. It was intermittent, and I never saw it. But today I was trying a still life with some speedlights set up and grabbed the 18-200 because I didn't know how I was really going to compose it yet.

When I turned it on, it made four tapping noises and then stopped. Really stopped. The VR doesn't do anything anymore except make four taps when you power up the camera and one tap when you turn off the camera.

So, I think my beloved lens is taking a trip back to Mother Nikon tomorrow. I did some searching on the internets because I thought I had heard of someone else having a similar problem. The only thing I can find is folks who have the AF system stop working, but my AF works great, the VR not so much. Anyone else seen this issue?

If I understand you correctly, you had the same problems with the same lens on both the D70 and the D200?

If so then yes, it is time for the lens to be serviced.

Time to return to Nikon. I have heard of the VR systems on the 18-200 breaking before. Good luck.

Yes, the issue is present on both bodies, so I am pretty sure that it is a lens problem.

Thanks. I just wish these things would happen at better times. My brother and his family will be in town this week and I would like to have it for that. I have other lenses that cover that range, but it will mean swapping out now and then. The sooner I send it, the sooner I will get it back though...
