You can always select the batter, and blur the background a bit, if you have the time. The selection can be done better on the full size image - this was the small file displayed here on dgrin.

Yes, after duplicating the batter on a layer. The layer blurred with GB, needs to be below the copy of the batter so that the margins are sharp, and not blurrred.

Once you have the subject isolated from the background on layers, it is easy to have different curves for each of them also.
