Yet another logged-in Firefox problem...

I am helping a fellow Smugger (reflectionsby.smugmug.com) with his site. He recently reported to me that, when logged in and viewing a gallery, he often does not get his photos to appear until he reloads the page. Sometimes he needs to reload half a dozen times or more before the images appear. This only happens in Firefox and only when logged in. IE (6 or 7, I'm not sure) seems to work just fine, always.
Initially, I was unable to replicate his problem, after dozens of attempts in various galleries. Until now. My symptoms are slightly different than what he is reporting, however.
First, the link: http://reflectionsby.smugmug.com/gallery/2888927_wqdSb
For me, using Firefox 2.0.0.15 and WinXP Home Version 2002 SP2, I see no images when I use that URL, unless I reload ONCE. When the page loads (with no images), the URL gets changed to the URL of the first image (I believe):
http://reflectionsby.smugmug.com/gallery/2888927_wqdSb#163479670_Yn2TJ
so that when I 'reload', I'm actually using a different URL from the original (which didn't include the '#<imageID>' piece).

In IE6 6.0.2900.2180, the images appear, but only after the URL has changed.

Is it possible that IE automatically reloads the page if you modify the URL, but that Firefox does not, unless you explicitly reload the page?

Anyone have similar problems? He is using the Bulk Zoom hack and a bunch of code I wrote for him which has been working fine for close to a year. He had the stretchy code turned on, which I have turned off, to no effect.

The most troublesome part for me is that it took so long for the problem to manifest itself for me. This suggests some caching issue, similar to other Firefox problems reported, here. But I didn't want to clear my cache until I got some response in case there's something in there that can help illuminate the problem.

Thanks in advance,

Bill

    Folks,
Thanks for trying, but, as I mentioned, the problem only seems to occur after many, many trials. It worked fine for me, for a while, too. I can't expect anyone to undertake such a long test, so I'm hoping someone out there has had the same problem and can help...
Since it only seems to happen when logged in, maybe clearing the cache is the way to go. Or perhaps there is something in the Smugmug code that changes in loggedIn mode...headscratch.gifdunno

Sorry, what's the reason you won't clear cache? ear.gif

    A number of reasons...

    Andy,
Mostly, because I see it as a band-aid which doesn't fix the underlying problem. If there is something in the cache that is causing this, I would like to preserve the 'evidence' should Smugmug want to investigate. Also, in any case, the cache, itself, is not the problem. Either something is being put into the cache (by some code, somewhere) which is leading to the problem or the cache is being misread/misinterpretted by some code which is causing this odd behavior. If anyone can offer me an explanation of how and why the cache is causing this, then I'm open to clearing the cache. But, so far, all I've seen is 'I cleared my cache and the problem went away.' It's a shotgun approach I prefer not to take.

Besides, it may not be the cache at all.

So I'm trying to preserve a situation that is difficult to reproduce in the hopes that it will be useful in tracking down the root cause.

I had that problem as well. I found that one of my FireFox extensions was causing the problem. Is he using FasterFox? When I reset FasterFox's settings back to default, all the SmugMug loading problems went away. I just uninstalled FasterFox completely and have not had a problem with SmugMug loading since.

I don't believe Stephen (the original 'victim') is using FasterFox, but don't know for sure. I am definitely NOT, so that wouldn't explain my issues. But it's definitely something to pass on to Stephen.
My extensions are Firebug, RealPlayer, Skype, Talkback, and WebDeveloper. Stephen is on vacation, so it will be a while before I can get a list of extensions he is using.

Still, the different behavior in loggedIn vs. not loggedIn modes (for both of us) suggests it's a SmugBug, though not definitively, of course.

    Thanks!
