How do I get my site on search engines?

I am new and have been searching for this piece of information. I know certain search engines have various ways of getting sites listed when you type various terms in the search box. How do you get your site listed on a search engine though?

I am looking for information on various search engines such as google, yahoo, and ask.com as well as others.

Probably the single most important thing is to get linked to from other sites, preferable with anchor text related to your site and the keywords you would imagine users might search for.

Do a search yourself for your keywords, see what sites are currently listed and then go to alltheweb.com and in the search box type link:(address of those sites)

This will list the sites that link to those sites, see if you can acquire similar backlinks.
