Problems with Softness in a Nikon 50mm 1.4 Lens

I've taken a few pics the last couple of weeks with a Nikon 50mm 1.4 lens on my D200 and noticed that I am having a difficult time getting them sharp.
It's not the shallow DOF (as I thought at first) either.
The lens has been sent back to Nikon for this complaint and they made some minor adjustments and sent it back. Haven't noticed any improvement since getting it back.
The issue I'm having sounds similar to what is described here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1YRAW0K3WMUDB
There's also a few discussions of it here: http://photo.net/nikon-camera-forum/00J8Pn
What I find interesting is that the two camps seems firmly entrenched - the 'soft focus on the 1.4 is a myth', etc.
This 1.4 has been used on 2 different D200's and with various settings (especially the sharpness, used A, +1, +2, normal, etc.) but seem to get the softness or halo look anytime pics are taken at 1.4 with it.
