I tend to do a lot of ground level outdoor shooting, and I just stumbles upon the gorillapod slr zoom. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this little puppy and if its worth the 50 bucks. Id be using it mostly with a d80 and a 70-300 or 18-55 lens.
Would it be good for long exposures with a smaller lens? Im getting some new nd filters and it sounds like a cool tripod to get low down water shots.

I have one. It's great, light, small, but plenty sturdy. I wouldn't plan on doing any serious serious shooting, but for travel, its fantastic. I only say it's not perfect for "proper" shooting because its hard to get the camera perfectly level. In other words, with a ballhead or even a good tip-tilt head, you have finer control of the camera angle. With the gorilla, it's more flexible nature means the whole thing flexes a bit on you as you try to dial in a small adjustment and you either go too much or too little... if you've ever played with arms like these (common in lots of machinery) you'll know what I mean. The adjustments are a bit "rubbery". Pretty easy fixes in photoshop, just be prepared.

A gorillapod is a great tool for mounting off camera flashes in unusual places also. Just screw in the little floor stand that comes with your speedlite, on the 1/4 thread and you are good to go.
