My cousin Daniela just had a dance recital at UCLA-- I was very impressed by them, much better than I expected!

Here's some of the good ones:

and here's my cousin. Not a solo shot, but I think it captures her personality well:

This type of photography is harder than I thought! I used an 85 mm set to f/2 on a d300, and still, the lighting conditions were such that there were several shots I missed I wish I had gotten. Also, when they did truly spectacular things (hand stands, jumps, etc), I found I was cutting off limbs; the kick above is kind of an anomaly. Probably should have used a 50 mm instead...

Thoughts? Thanks for looking!

I think you did very well. Dance is tough to shoot...movement, difficult light, restrictions on shooting positions and equipment. And if you don't know the choreography in advance, you're likely miss the best shots. The second shot is my favorite. thumb.gif

#5 and 6 are the best. Nice captures because as Richard has said, its pretty difficult to take shots while dancing. You did pretty well however.thumb.gif

Thanks for the comments! #5 might be my favorite, but for more personal reasons-- my cousin is the one looking at the camera while everyone else looks at the center.
