Pardon but these look like they've been oversharpened. Maybe they weren't in super sharp focus to begin with and then after the b/w conversion the sharpened edges got jagged and boxy looking.
#1 on the "sails"- at the edge you can see the pixellation
#2 I like it, I'd blur/black out the can in the window. I like the harshness on the sign against the white wall. Makes it all look interesting. The oversharpening works.
#3 It's almost HDR but it's so busy my eye bounces all over the place. Maybe some closeups of the really neat items?
#4 the focus is on the horse and sheep but the title suggests it's about the scarecrow [and rightfully so!] so I'd reshoot that and correct that and keep the sharpness down a bit. Very nice composition though. I would like to this in colour, looks like a warm pic.
#5 some lint decided to get scanned along with your print. sneaky little buggers...
#6 the boats have the jagged edges too.

I don't think you asked for in depth critiques but I think these images just need a little do over because they are good but the pp took them back a bit. iloveyou.gif

I like the oversharpening here. It adds grain to these photos and I feel this is something that is sorely lacking in many black-and-white photos. This is just one man's humble opinion though.

My favourite is the last one. I really have no idea as there is quite a bit of negative space in the upper right corner. I just feel that it is an easy image to look at and I find myself wondering more about that spot.:D

The whole set though is great. I assume you used some filters on these!

Thanks gsj. The last is my favourite also, no filters were used on any of them.

Oh no....I don't know if they are over sharpened or not. My monitor isn't the best, but you would know if you printed one out.

I liked them all, but I like BW and the can in the window...I'd keep it in. Adds to the simplicity and gives the eye something else to see in all the "white".

Sharpening is of course subjective. I was looking to replicate the high contrast sharpness we used to get with Tri-X film back in the days (without going to far.
#1 on the "sails"- at the edge you can see the pixellation
I saw that too as I was sharpening the converted image. When it didn't completely go away when I reduced the radius to 0.1 and lowered the amount I had a look at the original color image before any PP. What you are seeing is the cable stitched to the sail edge as seen below.

#2 I like it, I'd blur/black out the can in the window. I like the harshness on the sign against the white wall. Makes it all look interesting. The oversharpening works.
The title of that photo is "Incongruity". I was struck by the incongruous juxtaposition of an upscale jewelry shop sign and over it, windows with broken blinds and a beer can.
#3 It's almost HDR but it's so busy my eye bounces all over the place. Maybe some closeups of the really neat items?
Point well taken. As you can imagine it contains almost all possible colors and I wanted to see how it would translate to B&W (I prefer the colored version below.

You're right on this one if you mean that the animals are more in focus than the scarecrow. At the time I was about shooting (with a camera) animals and that was my focus.
#5 some lint decided to get scanned along with your print. sneaky little buggers...
Yup. This one should not have been included as it is of poor quality. It has great sentimental value to me however as it sits on a little island off the new england coast which my late wife and I used to sail to quite frequently. This image was taken on our last trip to the island 15 years ago three months before she passed away.
#6 the boats have the jagged edges too.
I don't see it here but as I said sharpness is somewhat subjective. I looked at the roof lines of the buildings in the distance while sharpening and tried to avoid going too far.
I don't think you asked for in depth critiques but I think these images just need a little do over because they are good but the pp took them back a bit. iloveyou.gif
Actually I appreciate others' honest opinions. And as for the PP, as I said I'm trying various methods and don't expect all will turn out well. Sometimes other opinions help one to make a decision.

Thanks Mary Kim. I liked the contradiction between the upscale jewelry store sign and the grungy window blinds and beer can above it.

I like the colour one too. It looks like they have a lot of neat things to photograph. I'm sorry about your wife. It's nice you have the shot to look at and remember.
The sails look better to me knowing they are supposed to look like that.
