Weekly Assignment #85: Street lights

On of the first things a traveler visiting a distant place usually notices is a difference in street lighting. Street lamps always played an important role in urban architecture, providing both lighting for the cityscape and being an essential part of it.
For this class we're going to capture these ubiquitous silent guys...
The simplest way would be to get a shot of one against a clear (or overcast:-) sky. But I think it would be more interesting if you manage to incorporate the rest of the environment into your frame, thus bringing the valuable content and essentially a justification for the primary subject existence. Remember, however, that your shot still gonna be about the street light itself, rather than, say, about the a cathedral it helps to illuminate.
One shot per entry, up to three entries per person, provided they are all of different lights and different manners of capture. Day or night, up to you. Fresh pictures, as always, moderate post processing.
Let's get some street lights!

No context shot?
...but for the moment...smugmug is down. Now we all gotta wait!
Dont know why I am having problems with trying to remove the large watermark. Have tried twice on this photo and it just wont go...even after waiting for a couple hours. But you can see the pic enough. This was taken in the evening but the low sun was the light.
Edited version of the first. Yes Nikolai I was boring and dead center. Although the backlighting and siloette was intentional. It doesn't get dark here until after my bedtime so I had to come up with an alternitive light. My thought was using natural light as "the light" itself. However...I had taken your thought on your original post Quote... But I think it would be more interesting if you manage to incorporate the rest of the environment into your frame, thus bringing the valuable content and essentially a justification for the primary subject existence. Here in Alaska the existance during the summer is that there is no justification for having a lamp turned on...because its light almost 24 hours a day...or at the time of this shooting 16 hours a day.
So I goofed on dead center too much on the first one and to spice things up I cropped and I added a glow to give more of an interesting look. I might not be able to pass this assignment in the way you want. But I sure did give it a try.
Thank you!
It's a street light alright, but... it's boring...:-(
Dead center, no context, primary subject barely visible due to a strong back lighting....
Wanna try again?
I added an edit on my original post.
And I understand that not all the street lights can be located in an intersting places, so I'm not gonna bug you for WA shot

Found this one while wandering around downtown San Diego, on... you guessed it, 3rd Ave!
Captured a little bit of context with it!!!

Great capture, Chris, exactly what I was hoping for!
And I *love* SD!
Got anything from GLQ?;-)
Nothing postable!! :cry
I was down there with other thoughts in mind when I saw this streetlamp and just HAD to grab it for the assignment. Gas Lamp is on my ever growing list of places to shoot though, so don't be surprised to see some soon!!

Where is this, DC?
Yep, Washington, DC. At this point of view the White House is just out of frame to the left.

It's all about the moment...
To avoid people problem use WA lens if you had one. Not too many will recognize the fact that you still would have the entire street in your frame even when you're pointing your camera at 45 degree angle skywards...
That'll be the next glass I purchase then. I just ordered the nifty fifty portrait lense 1.8f. Expect very nice detailed shots with lots of bokeh in my subsequent shots. I also obtained a load of filters (UV, Polarizer, Circular Porlarizer, and I'm in the process of acquiring an IR filter also.) I also purchased the remote sutter! Slowly but surely Nikolai! ;-)

Now if only Virginia had added some of the fine Paris lightings, e.g. a morning capture of Le Pont d'Alexandre III :-)
