This past Sunday I decided not to race and photograph a local mountain bike race in FairHill Maryland. I love strobing cycling so thought I would post a few sample images from the race.

Here is a link to the complete race images:

These are cool shots. The only thing that is distacting to me is the frozen wheel spokes and knobby tires. The BG conveys motion, but the bike looks like it is sitting still.

I like them a lot! Very engaging photos. Did you run a two light set up or was the sun your friend?

I like the thumbs up. It may or may not be the best one (hard to tell, they are all so good) but I like the biker's attitude!

Awesome shots!! I really like these.

So how does the strobing work? (How did you set it up, what you used etc?)

Looks pretty bright to me :D

I like the second. Combination of the color, lighting and composition. And the sixth for the rider's thumbs up to you. The background is nicely blurred in that as well.

In simple terms strobing is just using multiple flash units off camera and setting the power to balance, fill or overpower the ambien lighting.

The easies thing is to read here - its the bible link for strobing....hence the website name, strobist!

    Michael ....

First of all, all of those are very well done and give a unique "look" to that event ...

Were you panning as well as you shot these ? If so, that's even more impressive ....

    Cecli,
Correct - I panned all these images. Flash used to freeze the rider...panning to provide the background motion.

These are very well done Michael. Just a weird question, but how do you set the strobes to ensure you're not blinding the poor riders as they descend the hill? Shooting racing events I could use a strobe, but I always hesitate because I don't want to be the cause of a crash lol.
