Spring time in the Columbia Gorge

I spent a few days in Portland over the weekend, and a few hours taking photos of waterfalls in the gorge. The rivers and creeks are flowing steady right now, and I got drenched splashing around in the creeks and getting sprayed on from the waterfalls. Good times.

I'm always amazed at the density of waterfalls in this area, and some of the trails (Eagle Creek, Elowah / Upper McCord Creek) are spectacular. I only wish I had more time.

Wow these are gorgeous. I've been to Multnomah Falls a couple times but I don't think I've been to any of the others (bad Oregonian, bad!).

I'm a newbie here, and I don't know much, but these are stunning in my opinion (I could be biased though mwink.gif )

Nice series but the first and third really stand out to me! I'd love to get down there sometime soon.

    Amazing
Amazing is the only word that comes to mind, great long exposure use on the water. And the colors are just outstanding, perfect :)

Absolutely gorgeous. Waterfalls are one of my favorite subjects. I have never been able to capture the flowing water as you did in these. Very impressive shots. I love them all!!

I'm in Seattle and I still make it down there 3-4 times a year. I don't think I walked more than 8 miles total for all of the falls in this set, and none of the hikes were difficult at all (just a little muddy and wet). I would recommend going at off peak times (sunrise/sunset or weekdays or rainy weather) as the trails can get pretty busy.

Full frame body (5D MII), 16-35mm and 24-105mm lenses, each with a polarizer filter. These are all single exposures, usually around f/16 ISO 100 with some variance. Had a cloth to wipe off the front of the polarizer between exposures, rain proof jacket and pants, and rubber boots too.

Thanks again for all the comments, the gorge is an amazing place for waterfalls, and an ideal place to photograph during rainy/overcast spring weather.

An amazing series. thumb.gif I learn quite a bit from your compositions (especially that I have seen these falls in person). They make me wishing for a wide angle lens.

Thanks, Latourell is one of my favorites. I think I'll have to add Elowah to that list now too (it was the first time I was there).

Thanks - yeah, a wide angle lens is a must for these. I actually just used two lenses, the 16-35 and the 24-105, and almost all of the shots were with the 16-35.

Wow Ron, beautiful shots! I just bought the Gitzo 2531, I'm happy to see that it can hold up to some long exposure shots like this!

Again great shots, I'm off to check out your galleries!

Thanks Jessa - the tripod did wobble when I was in ~18" of quick moving current in Eagle Creek when I was trying to take a photo of punch bowl falls, but it would have taken a tripod twice as heavy to withstand that probably, and that's not a price I'm willing to pay - I'll go back in late summer when the water isn't as high.

Anyway, it's a great tripod, have fun.
