Still have more to process, and with Aperture 3, I am motivated.

    Looks gorgeous, Dan!! clap.gif

Is it an HDR then processed in Aperture? Or just a single exposure in Aperture?

    Thanks Chris.

3 exposures processed in Photomatix, then Aperture.

I love Acadia and this shot captures it beautifully. The reflection in the water is great and the post-processing work is nice and invisible.

Wonderful, Dan. Just as though I were standing there with you -- and that's the object of the game, IMHO. Great shot and great processing to bring out what the scene most likely looked like in real life.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. Acadia was a rich photo opportunity, and now that I have a better PP tool and a better eye, it is real fun to re-process some of these shots from last October.:D :D

    Beautiful work! thumb.gif

Totally belies the universally-bemoaned state of A3!

A3 is the increasingly common vernacular for Aperture 3.

I love A3. It has some bugs, but once you know how to use it, they pretty much go away, and I am sure Apple will release some stability updates. Do you use it?

I did for a while. When it was first released I had expected Aperture would be in my future, so ensured I configured a serious video card when I bought my current machine, but did not want Aperture to manage my images - I didn't trust it after experiencing iPhoto.

Then, when v1.5 provided the option to reference my image files where I put them, I bought it and began using it. It was fantastic. However, when (a little later - v1.6?) I began to use the new spot tool, bizarre performance issues and problems arose. At that stage my Mac desktop was the fastest computer Apple had ever made. I persevered as long as I could but Apple was obviously unwilling to fix, or even concede they had, a problem. I had been using the Lightroom beta from its very first release, so bought LR 1.0 the day it came out and turned my back on Aperture.

My experience with LR has been excellent, even though Adobe is more than a little cute with its so-called public beta nonsense. With LR beta 3 going through its present tedious process, and then A3 being released (and having been rumoured to have been completely rewritten in 2.0 to overcome my previous performance concerns with 1.X), I began to wonder whether this was the time to check it out again.

However, reading the plethora of user discontent with A3 performance within days of release and no response (even acknowledgement) from Apple, I see my previous experience being repeated for a whole new generation of Aperture users. I'm a Mac user from the mid-80s so I'm a believer, but this is nuts.

I haven't downloaded the A3 trial so I don't start the 30 days period running - just in case Apple delivers a fix which I then can't trial. However, I'll definitely be buying and using LR3 when it is (finally) released. By then the door may have closed on Aperture for me for ever.

Thanks for the reply WW. I know Apple very well, and they never reply regarding bugs, etc. But rest assured, they always address them. Even without the stability updates, A3 is a winner imo. The keys to making it work effectively:

    1. Re-process old A2 photos only one at a time when you need to.
    2. Disable Face detection when processing/editing photos
    3. Use selective brushes sparingly and slowly (allow the machine to finish processing before you use another brush).

OK - dumb question of the day. How do I turn off / disable Face detection? Other than that slowing things down, so far I'm very happy with A3

Go to: preferences under the Aperture pull down menu, then select general and unclick disable facesdeal.gif
