I Need Help Too

Today I had three shoots to do. I use a 40D and on my first shoot was of a parade and I used my 24-105 lens with a 580 flash. As soon as I started I was having great difficulty in making my settings. I couldn't control my ISO and I kept getting an error message as follows Err 06 Self Cleaning Sensor unit malfunction. Consult with Canon service centre.
Later during the day I did an autotest using a 70-200 lens and I was still getting the same problem with the same error message.
I have another couple of shoots on tomorrow. Is there anything I can do to solve this problem.
Regards
Bob

See if either of these pages help. I found them by googling for "canon 40d err 06 self-cleaning".

The first one, from Canon themselves, says a firmware update will correct bogus Err 06 messages. I don't know what version of the firmware you have, but if you're using a version earlier than 1.1.1, you might try updating and see if that cures the problem.

The second page is a post from someone else who was having Err 06 problems with his 40D and describes what he did to fix it. If his situation sounds similar to yours, you might give his fix a try; it seems harmless. Unfortunately he doesn't say what version of the firmware he had.

    Hi Craig
Thanks for your reply. I am currently using firmware 1.1.1 After removing the batteries from the camera over night and fully charging them. It would appear the problem has been solved although it is probably early days to say that. I am on a knifes edge fearing the error will return and I would like to know if possible what is actually causing this error.
    Regards
    Bob
