I just watched a webcast that showed how to properly convert a file to CYMK for printing. Along with this he discussed the Colorsync app in the Mac OS.

This is pretty cool. It can display color spaces in 3D. It can also display different paper icc profiles in 3D. This will allow you to see "color graphically" the gamut the paper can produce.

Now for the question..........I swear, double swear, I saw him overlay an icc color space graph or a paper icc profile graph with an image file. Then I was able to see the photo's color gamut overlaid / compared to the color space or paper gamut.

This would really help with choosing the color space, paper and printing method, vendor etc.

I can not duplicate this and I have Googled by eyeball out!!

Sam, are you sure that the overlay of an image onto a profile was not done with the commercial "ColorThink" software - rather than with the free Apple system app/utility "ColorSync Utility"? I could be wrong, however I thought that ColorSync Utility only compared one profile with another profile.

Windows XP users have a similar option available linked below. I don't know what Windows 7 users can do...

Thanks Ziggy, I gave the link a quick look... perhaps I should have been more clear. The XP PowerToy that I linked can compare the 3D gamut of one profile superimposed over another profile - just like ColorSync Utility can on the Mac OS...but in Windows 7, is this possible?

The CS utility can only plot two profiles over each other, not an image. That functionality can be found in either CHROMIX's ColorThink or ColorThink Pro. And its really slow, you need to plot a very low rez image (800x600pixels). And no, it really doesn’t help with choosing the color space, paper and printing method, vendor etc. Its very useful, no question. You can see when and where an image gamut exceeds (mismatches) the gamut of an output space and vise versa. Its useful to prove the need for wide gamut editing spaces compared to output spaces (ProPhoto for output to a modern ink jet). But its not a process you’d use on an image by image basis (too slow) and, the facts of life are, we have big disconnects in gamut size and shape. We have to deal with that when converting our data (soft proof, select best rendering intent, sometimes edit in the source color space with this soft proof on).

Thanks for the input everyone!

I double swears I seen it work..............I wrotes down "Color Sync" As I does remembers it looked like Color Sync.

Could be the herbal remidies............don't know.

I have put a reminder into my calendar to check online for the podcast next week!
