  From the help file http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/1240228-what-s-new-preview-mode. The help file seems to say that the changes in preview effect legacy.

  Email the help desk and give them the time when this happened. They can restore the photos.
  Probably need the gallery names also.

  They never helped me restore my lost images. I wrote to Smugmug several times but got no help. I finally just gave up waiting for them to help me. I had to spend hours, days and nights, uploading all of my galleries again. It is a good thing that I had backup copies of everything on my external hard drives.
