How do you tell a dragonfly from a damselfly ?

    Brian,

    It is commonly stated or implied to be the case. However, at least one species, Club-Tailed Dragonfly Gomphus vulgatissimus, is quite an exponent.

    Thanks all for the comments and another example.

    SB and Jo - the rule as stated does generally work but mine and Harold's example are rare exceptions. Reading up on it seems young dragonflies can break the rule which mine certainly was.

    All are doing it as they emerge from the nymphs (Askew calls them larvae) So maybe some, more than others, can retain the ability.
