Can not add any more Content Boxes.

StrakerStraker Registered Users Posts: 8 Big grins

I hope someone can help me with this, can you extend the amount of content boxes on your home page as mine is no longer letting me click and drag anymore content boxes unless I delete one, it then lets me add one to replace which indicates there is a content box limit restriction in place, I've still got a huge amount of content including image boxes, text boxes HTML boxes and loads more that needs to be added to my home page but I cant add anything at the moment.

Thanks Marco.

    An answer in the thread Maximum Number of Elements on a Page? from late December of 2016 indicates there is a limit. From that thread, here's an answer from a SmugMug support hero:

    @Bea said:
    You can add 100 rows of content with a max of 20 blocks per row on a page. We ( SmugMug Support Heroes) can clone pages, so if you email us and send us a link to the page you'd like us to clone, we'll be happy to do it for you! We can't do it based on a Dgrin request, you would need to email us, directly!

    I would argue that having a home page that contains a huge amount of content means that very few people will actually scroll down and see the content. If you post a link to your site perhaps some forum participants can provide some suggestions.

    Hi Denise thanks for the update, my site is set up like a blog journal where you tend to find scroll as being acceptable, new posts would appear at the top and regular visitors no longer need to scroll to older content..

    The 100 rows of content does not take columns into consideration, if I were to use the max of 3 columns and post equal content in each one then Smugmug would only allow me 33 rows of content, I use columns so my rows are greatly reduced.

    "I get what you are saying above but I think that choice should come down to the owner of the site?"

    I dont know why Smugmug would restrict this, if a customer needs more contrnt boxes then please let us have them :), I certainly need a lot more, this is not a rant, I'm just don't understand why there is a restriction in place? as a result its stopped me from continuing with my current design :(

    Below is a link to my site of which I was working on up to the point of now not having any more content blocks to proceed (i use 2 columns, main page and right sidebar) each image opens to a linked page with more images and content.

    Once again thanks for your reply

    Cheers Marco

    Oh, I see what you are after. It looks like you have organized your site like a blog where there is continuous content. I have something similar on my site in my blog - but that piece of my site is hosted on Blogger, not on SmugMug. I can't imagine using content blocks on a single page to publish my blog. And you're right, people will likely only read the first entry (or the first few). Unless they are after a specific topic, reachable via my side bar.

    My other concern with using your approach is long-term management of the entries. I usually don't update old blog entries but I have done that on occasion. I can easily find the page on my blog (since each is clickable, both by date and by category if I have assigned one); I wouldn't be happy scrolling through a huge set of content blocks to find the entry that needs fixing.

    I don't know the reason for the restriction either; someone from SmugMug would need to explain this.

    I'll think about alternate approaches, nothing jumps out at me so far.

    @leftquark, do you have a suggestion for an approach to allow this type of format without exceeding the content block limit?

    @Straker, your photos are amazing!

    Thanks again Denise for replying back so quickly :), you are absolutely correct in what you have said about a blog, as my original site looked identical to this which was a blog on Wordpress.com

    In the past I used both Smugmug and wordpress in tandem but around a year ago Wordpress.com stopped allowing external image hosting.

    I never hosted direct from Wordpress as the quality was adjusted and artefacts could be seen on all of my images, but hosted on Smugmug and linked was perfect as Smugmug allows me as a power user to have nothing added, no sharpening or colour adjustments, images uploaded to Smugmug always look identical to what I see in photoshop hence why I love smugmug so much :)

    I was thinking of maybe having a page per year setup as I can easily make a page look like the home page and then somewhere on the main home page or better still the pull down menu ... yes that's it the navigation menu ... its always right in front of me and I could not see for looking, in the navigation menu have links ... 2016 Posts ... 2015 Posts and so on ... that way I can keep each year easily within 100 content blocks and if I have a year where there is a lot of posts then I could easily change the yearly to a 6 month period.

    I think I was just being lazy and not thinking this through, I'll post a demo of this on my site within the next few days.

    :)

    @Straker, your photos are amazing!

    Than you so much Denise :)

    Once again thanks as you have got me thinking instead of me just thinking doom and gloom I think this is going to work out fine using the top navigation menu.

    Cheers Marco.

    I'm glad some of my words helped you to think of a different approach. I look forward to seeing your updated site!

    I would recommend, as you've mentioned, creating a custom page for each year. And if needed, a custom page for each 6 month period. Doing it this way, you would most likely not run into the 100-row limit. Although if you do, you could always start another custom page.
    To allow your viewers to your site to navigate to older 'blogs posts', you can add the custom pages to your menu. For example, have a top level item of Blog in your menu, and then sub level items of 2017, 2016, etc. Although as the user you aren't able to copy or clone pages, if you have a custom page created that you want to have a copy of, email us at help@smugmug.com. We can copy (clone) a custom page for you. This can be helpful so you have a copy of a custom page without having to re-create its design and you can just edit the content block text.
