Add/uploaded photos not appearing

I am perplexed, I have just added photos to a gallery in smugmug and they do not appear. No not the "image processing" display that I normally see while they get loaded - they just dissapeared after the upload finished. :dunno

At first I thought I screwed something up so I tried it again and still nothing. All appeared normal until I clicked on the gallery to see if the images had been processed and they were not to be found.

I am using a Windows XP machine that I used to load all of my photos and a comcast broadband connection.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Rich

*EDIT*

I can upload the photos one at a time but when I try more than one none of them show up in the gallery.

    Hi Dick,

Ouch - sorry you're having problems. Which loader are you trying? Have you tried the Universal Drag and Drop Beta? That one works great. Let me know specifially the uploader you are using and I can help diagnose the problem.

Also - make sure you're not trying to upload any files that are not jpgs - like thumbs.db or other non jpg files.

I'm here all night and will help you - promise!

    Hi Andy wave.gif

No worries I am just messing around while I do some work. All .jpg files straight from the point and shoot camera. (Gotta keep the blokes over on JM up to date) How do I determine which loader I am using?

    Thanks,

    Rich

I am using Windows drag and drop loader - funny how I never noticed that I was picking a loader as part of the process headscratch.gif

    Hey Rich,

Yes - the JM crowd cannot live long without more from you though, so this IS IMPORTANT, Dangit!

Click "add photos" on the next screen, you'll see in VERY TINY TINY print lol3.gif "we have others" upper part of your screen - click that and choose the Universal Drag and Drop Loader Beta. It will give you the attached screen:

BTW, if it asks you "do you want to install blah blah blah from Rad Inks" that's OK thumb.gif

I was having issues earlier today as well. I had two files (out of 88) that wouldn't upload. I tried the beta java uploader, then the windows IE uploader, then I tried the IE one again and the third time was the charm.

Ok, this is starting to get aggravating. Upload 88 photos, 9 don't upload (even though they do, but at the end it tells me 79 were uploaded and sure enough that's true). Upload those 9...tells me 6 are uploaded...now I'm off to try the last 3.

Well at least now it's telling me that it only uploads the number of files that it did succesfully upload, but it's still having upload issues. I shouldn't have to try two times just to upload 1 image. What's up guys?

I cannot recreate the issue, I'm sorry - been uploading with the Universal D&D all day/night. Are you having continuous difficulties or was it just the one time?

Well, depends what counts as a time. If trying the same image multiple times is one time, then I've had it happen twice. If each upload is a seperate time, I've had it happen 6 out of 7 times IIRC.

    Andy,

I have to chime in on this topic as recently I'm experiencing similar difficulties. When doing batches with S*E roughly a 1/10 of pictures does not make it - S*E detects them and I've to reupload them.
I can even deliver you exact times (all GMT+1) - all of these images failed in my last 2 batches (it even happens on a 2nd try as the 1/10th rule still applies):

I know there are a lot of potential troublemakers from Germany to SM HQ, but maybe these times are useful for you to improve something in this area.

    Thanks,
    Sebastian

EDIT: This didn't happen before the January 16th that offen - on Jan 4th I had a ~200 file batch that went through flawless!

Andy - I had this problem the week following ThanksGiving and eventually there was a problem found on the SM end (I want to say that I think I was working with Chris?).

Troubles uploading from here also... yesterday & today
I was having problems yesterday as well but thought it was my isp. Re-tried and they uploaded. Also when adding to the cart sometimes they wouldn't show up... just had red x's in the cart but you could click them and return to the photo in the gallery - weird.

Today: Trying to upload one photo & keep getting error messeges. Tried 2 different uploaders. The 4th time it partially uploaded... meaning 1/8 of the photo was there and 7/8 is just a gray screen. I'm trying to replace it now (same photo).

Hey... this don't have nothing to do with that one guy who'd uploading like bizzionlions of photos does it rolleyes1.gif

Seriously... hope the problem is detected quick and easily resolved.

All the uploaders you are mentioning send files individually. Which means if the connection is lost, interrupted, etc... instead of aborting the entire upload, you lose a single file. So the problem is with your connection to us. We are looking into this based on your reports here... and we actually hope it is something on our end so that it is something we can actually fix.

If it is something between you guys and us, or something on your end... it would be pretty much out of our control. So this is one of the times we are hoping it is our error... but at the current time our systems guys remain skeptical.

Thanks so much for the details, and please keep us updated if things change or if you log any more specific information (for instance, if there is a certain time of day that seems worse than others, certain uploader, certain images... etc)

It seems to me, though I don't have a very large sample size, that the universal drag and drop is not as reliable in this regard as the regular windows IE uploader.

Also, it doesn't seem to be aborting the upload. One time I was just uploading 1 file (with the windows uploader) and it took the usual amount of time to finish uploading, my connection appeared active (i.e. the upload one of those two computer monitors was blue), but when it was done it told me 0 files uploaded successfully, and sure enough it was right.

Good point! I've actually never seen it that the upload process was aborted and continued with the next file.
The standard S*E behavior is to send the file. After the file has been send S*E gets the image ID from the SM server. That's the point where I can see that an upload did not succeed - in this case S*E just logs '/int>', because it can't filter any image ID out of the response of the SM server that is empty.

The problem might be my connection being interrupted? I use Firefox and the beta uploader to drag and drop my photos into smugmug. I reported several different problems last month, and the problems continue. Last night I uploaded 115 photos from 7 different folders. When I went back to check on the upload I wound up with 13 less photos in smugmug than the number of photos in my folder. I then went to the sort photo option to sort the photos by filename to compare what smugmug accepted and what I thought I sent. It might be coincidence but the order of the files not accepted by smugmug in a couple of the uploads was every 3rd photo - weird.

I really don't like to spend time figuring out why the photos don't load or show as 100% sent but don't appear. It's tedious. I also don't want to pay a 3rd party for an application to send photos to a site that offers photo hosting services (no offense intended to the developer of S*E).

I love smugmug and I can keep trying to get a 100% upload of my files, but is this really an end-user problem? How about some warning back to us that we tried to load 100 files and only 98 were accepted?

No problem, Andy. I figured I'd pipe in to add to the recent experiences. It's probably nothing you haven't heard and I know you guys will fix it in due time.

I love smugmug so much I can put up with it and wait another day or two. As you said, it is a beta. Maybe I'll give SendToSmugMug a try.

    Keep up the good work!
