Loads lickety split for me. Both from your custom name, http://gallery.caseserve.com and your http://caseserve.smugmug.com name.

Who is your internet provider, and where are you located? (Location field in your Dgrin profile is not showing).

I'm in North Central NJ West eek7.gif

I just did a speed test with dslreports.com (highly recommended) and I'm getting 5988 down and 760 up my plan is 6mb down/768k up.

It just seems to take forever to download sometimes, not just today but ramdomly. If I load theknot.com for instance it loads very fast.

Thanks for the quick follow up Andy,

Onethumb and Wireless monitor our speed out to the net very closely - and alert us when there's any sort of hiccup - we aren't experiencing anything now, or lately.

Thanks again Andy, I'm not as concerned with my speed as I would be concerned if my pages were not loading quickly for others.

I certainly wouldn't mind seeing a traceroute from your home machine to ours...

Windows (2k/XP): Start > Run > Type "cmd" in the open dialog, then "tracert www.smugmug.com" in the command window without quotes.

Mac (OS X): Applications > Utilities > Terminal > Type "traceroute www.smugmug.com" at the shell prompt without quotes.

If you could do that today or tomorrow, it would be much appreciated. We may not see anything right off the bat, but I'm just curious to see how you're getting across the country to us.

Feel free to email me (andrew@smugmug) if you'd rather not post it here.

    Thanks!

Sorry I did not see this. I'll do the tracert this evening.

    Thanks,
    John,

I think it has to do with the amount of javascript code you are accessing externally from your www.caseserve.com machine.

The page loaded slowly for me, but I used Adblock to block the javascript files from your other server, and the probelm was gone.

    Hope this helps,

sure....adblock is an extension in Firefox which allows u to block images, scripts, etc that you don't want to load.

So by using that, I was able to block the scripts from ur www.caseserve.com machine. That way I could test your site smugmug site, like it didn't have the external scripts without u having to change any code.

By doing that I saw a significant speed improvement, which leads me to believe the problem is related to those external scripts.

    Hope that helps

www.caseserve.com is actually pointed via CNAME to smugmug. So URLs like this: http://www.caseserve.com/jsdomenu/jsdomenu.js in your HTML are actually causing you to load the entire smugmug page multiple times in your browser (it's roughly equivalent to http://www.smugmug.com/jsdomenu.jsdomenu.js). You're not actually getting "/jsdomenu/jsdomenu.js" because that file doesn't exist at smugmug.

I wouldn't be surprised if your browser was freaking out trying to find javascript from those files and taking even longer than it should, either.

    Hope that helps!

    Hey Don,

Below is quote from this thread...
    caseserve wrote:
I advertise my site as www.CaseServe.com when they go there I have a start page that forwards to gallery.caseserve.com
His cname "gallery" points to smugmug, but when u go to "http://www.caseserve.com" he redirects to gallery.smugmug.com. Kinda weird if you ask me. But the result is as you describe, when you attempt to get "http://www.caseserve.com/jsdomenu/jsdomenu.js" it forwards you to "http://gallery.caseserve.com/jsdomenu/jsdomenu.js"

Instead of doing the way it's being done, he should have a default page (index.html, etc) that redirects rather than doing it on a DNS level.

    Cheers,

Thanks I just today changed my pointing (CName) from gallery.caseserve.com to smugmug.com to caseserve.com pointing to smugmug.com

I also fixed all the links in my site to rever to /gallery/xxxxx from http://gallery.caseserve.com/gallery/xxxx

Hopefully things will pick up now.

Nope, not so. Do an nslookup:

    Non-authoritative answer:
    www.caseserve.com canonical name = caseserve.smugmug.com.
    Name: caseserve.smugmug.com
    Address: 63.81.134.23

    He's not HTTP redirecting, he's CNAME'd it.

And since he has a bunch of <script> links and stuff in his customization which point to non-existent files, he's hammering his homepage over and over on smugmug instead.

    No wonder it's slow.

We could go at this all day, but I checked the CNAME issue before I posted about it (otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned it). He had it set up that way when he posted, not after your post. :)
