dgrin challenge 20 is upon us. it will run from monday, august 23rd at 12:01am nyc time, through monday, september 6th at noon nyc time. the guest judge this time is going to be our own sid, aka wxwax. he'll shoot song titles, i'm sure, but he's not competing this time the critiques and comments thread is working really well , so we'll continue with it. that's where you can place your images for, well, critique and comment! remember, in order for this to work, you should be commenting and critiquing for others as much as you expect to get for yourself. you've got to give to get!
the challenge 20 comments and critiques thread is right here
challenge 20 is about "song titles"
really it's a wide-open challenge, you can shoot almost anything you want, as long as it relates to a song title so, either shoot shoot shoot and then rack your brains for the right song for a particular pic, or, pick your songs, and then go shoot your pics!
here are a some examples for you:
i'm leavin', on a jet plane (john denver, how ironic)
extra, extra, read all about it (by immature lyrics)
taxi (by harry chapin)
me and my shadow (by al jolsen and dave dreyer)
all of the other rules of the dgrin challenges apply, click here to review them
this thread, is the one into which you post your challenge entry, and remember, one entry per person, and the photo must be fresh, taken during the challenge period
***challenge 20 will close to entries on monday, september 6th, 2004 at 12 noon nyc time***

If God Was One of Us Lyrics
If God had a name, what would it be
And would you call it to his face
If you were faced with him in all his glory
What would you ask if you had just one question
And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
If God had a face what would it look like
And would you want to see
If seeing meant that you would have to believe
In things like heaven and in jesus and the saints and all the prophets
And yeah yeah god is great yeah yeah god is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
He's trying to make his way home
Back up to heaven all alone
Nobody calling on the phone
Except for the pope maybe in rome
And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
What if god was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
Just trying to make his way home
Like a holy rolling stone
Back up to heaven all alone
Just trying to make his way home
Nobody calling on the phone
Except for the pope maybe in rome

Child of Mine
Carole King
all though you see the world different than me, sometimes i can touch upon
the wonders that you see,
all the new colors and pictures that you have designed.
oh yes sweet darling so glad you are a child of mine.
Child of mine,
child of mine,
oh yes sweet darling
so glad you are a child of mine.
you dont need directions you know which way to go,
i dont want to hold you back
i just want to watch you grow,
you are the one that tought me you dont have to look behind,
oh yes sweet darling so glad you are a child of mine.
child of mine,
child of mine,
oh yes sweet darling,
so glad you are a child of mine.
no body is gonna kill your dreams or tell you how to live your life.
there will always be people to make it hard for a while but you will change their heads when they see you smile,
the times you were born in may not have been the best. but you can make the times to come better then the rest,
i know you willl always be honest if you cant always be kind,
oh yes sweet darling, so glad you are a child of mine,
child of mine,
child of mind,
oh yes sweet darling
so glad you are a child of mine,
child of mine,
child of mine, of yes sweet darling
so glad you are a child of mine.

"Elusive Butterfly" - word and music by Bob Lind
You might wake up some mornin'
To the sound of something moving past your window in the wind
And if you're quick enough to rise
You'll catch a fleeting glimpse of someone's fading shadow
Out on the new horizon
You may see the floating motion of a distant pair of wings
And if the sleep has left your ears
You might hear footsteps running through an open meadow
Don't be concerned, it will not harm you
It's only me pursuing somethin' I'm not sure of
Across my dreams with nets of wonder
I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love

Fill my eyes
O Lithium sunset
And take this lonesome burden
Of worry from my mind
Take this heartache
Of obsidian darkness
And fold my darkness
Into your yellow light
I've been scattered I've been shattered
I've been knocked out of the race
But I'll get better
I feel your light upon my face
Heal my soul
O Lithium sunset
And I'll ride the turning world
Into another night
Into another night
Into another night
See mercury falling...
Here Comes the Sun - Beatles
Little darling, I feel that ice is slowly melting
Little darling, it seems like years since it’s been clear
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
And I say it’s all right

It's a lazy afternoon
and the beetle bugs are zooming
and the tulip trees are blooming
and there's not another human in view
but us two.
It's a lazy afternoon
and the farmer leaves his reaping
and the meadow cows are sleeping
and the speckled trouts stop leaping up stream
as we dream.
A far pink cloud hangs over the hill
unfolding like a rose.
If you hold my hand and sit real still,
You can hear the grass as it grows.
It's a hazy afternoon
and I know a place that's quiet, except for daisies running riot
and there's no one passing by it to see.
Come spend this lazy afternoon with me.

There's something in the way she moves,
Or looks my way, or calls my name,
That seems to leave this troubled world behind.
If I'm feeling down and blue,
Or troubled by some foolish game,
She always seems to make me change my mind.
Chorus:
'N'(and) I feel fine anytime she's around me now,
She's around me now
Almost all the time.
'N'(and) If I'm well you can tell that she's been with me now,
'N'(and) she's been with me now
Quite a long, long time
And I feel fine.___________
Every now and then the things I lean on lose their meaning,
And I find myself careening
Into places where I should not let me go.
-- She has the power to go where no one else can find me,
Yes, and to silently remind me
Of the happiness and good times that I know, you know.
Well I said I just got to know that:
It isn't what she's got to say
Or how she thinks or where she's been.
To me, the words are nice, the way they sound.
I like to hear them best that way -
It doesn't much matter what they mean,
Weh (when/well?) she says them mostly just to calm me down.
Chorus:
'N'(and) I feel fine anytime she's around me now,
A-she's around me now
Almost all the time.
If I'm well you can tell that she's been with me now,
And she's been with me now
Quite a long,
Long
Time -
Yes, and I feel fine

Kodachrome
They give us those nice bright colors
They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, Oh yeah
I got a Nikon camera
I love to take a photograph
So mama don't take my Kodachrome away
If you took all the girls I knew
When I was single
And brought them all together for one night
I know they'd never match
my sweet imagination
And everything looks worse in black and white

I saw the harbor lights
They only told me we were parting
The same old harbor lights
That once brought you to me
I watched the harbor lights
How could I help it, tears were falling
Some other harbor lights
Will steal your love from me
I longed to hold you close
And kiss you just once more
But you were on the ship
And I was on the shore
Now I'll know lonely nights
For all the while my heart is whispering
Some other harbor lights
Will steal your love from me
Some other harbor lights
Will steal your love from me

When the moon comes over the mountain
Every beam brings a dream, dear, of you
Once again we'll stroll 'neath the mountain
Through that rose-covered valley we knew
Each day is grey and dreary
But the night is bright and cheery
When the moon comes over the mountain
I'll be alone with my memories of you

He was working through college
on my grandpa's farm.
I was thirsting for knowledge
and he had a car. (yeah)
I was caught somewhere between a woman and a child.
When one restless summer we found love growing wild.
On the banks of the river on a well beaten path.
It's funny how those memories they last.
Like strawberry wine seventeen.
The hot July moon saw everything.
My first taste of love oh bittersweet.
The green on the vine.
Like strawberry wine.
I still remember
when thirty was old.
My biggest fear was September
when he had to go.
A few cards and letters and one long distance call.
We drifted away like the leaves in the fall.
But year after year I come back to this place.
Just to remember the taste.
Of strawberry wine and seventeen.
The hot July moon saw everything.
My first taste of love oh bittersweet.
The green on the vine.
Like strawberry wine.
The fields have grown over now.
Years since they've seen the plow.
There's nothing time hasn't touched.
Is it really him or the loss of my innocence.
I've been missing so much.... yeaaaaaa
Strawberry wine and seventeen.
The hot July moon saw everything.
My first taste of love oh bittersweet.
The green on the vine.
Like strawberry wine.
seventeen......
The hot July moon saw everything.
My first taste of love oh bittersweet.
The green on the vine.
Like strawberry wine.... strawberry wine....
ohhhhhhh..... strawberry wine....
The Morning Fog Lyrics from Kate Bush
Begin to bleed
Begin to breathe
Begin to speak.
D’you know what?
I love you better now.
I am falling
Like a stone
Like a storm
Being born again
Into the sweet morning fog.
D’you know what?
I love you better now.
I’m falling
And I’d love to hold you know.
I’ll kiss the ground.
I’ll tell my mother
I’ll tell my father
I’ll tell my loved one
I’ll tell my brothers
How much I love them.

"It's better to bite the hand that feeds you, than to feed the hand that bites you" - Me
guys, i'm putting up sid's comments all right here in this post. i'm in terrible pain for the past few weeks, these root canals are killing me! i hate getting old, sigh. it may take a while for me to get my comments done.
but here are sid's, he's set the bar for the guest judges,
Something in the Way She Moves/Lynnsite
A perfect combination of song title and image, makes you smile. Nice ‘golden hour’ sun on the horse. In a perfect world, the framing would be a little different. Sometimes you see how a shot is composed and everything feels perfect, the framing really adds to the energy of the shot – this one doesn’t have that feel. Probably because it’s an action shot, the framing isn’t as dynamic as the rest of the image. Again, love the pairing of song title and the horse action.
Harbor Lights/LynnMa
Absolutely lovely reflection of the pier and you have my favorite dusky blue in the shot. Love the color of the water. I must admit that the image makes me think more about a pier or dock than it does a harbor. It’s a very nice image, and well shot, very nice post processing. Perhaps an added something would give it an extra kick? Maybe a small fishing boat tied-up, or a moon in the sky?
Walk on By/Gubbs
A really nice B&W treatment, love the contrast and the range of grey/white/black. Very strong and a good exposure. It would feel even more tied-in to the song title if the framing emphasized that she’s playing while the folks keep walking by – as it is, it feels like the central messages are the sax player and the bridge support, and the folks who are walking by become the third element in the story. I really like the treatment you did to the final image, it looks great.
Lazy Afternoon/snapapple
What a gorgeous shot. Fantastic colors, looks like a painting. You can see everything, and everything has its own light. Looks like you worked hard on this image, and it’s paid off. The image seems more dusk-like than afternoon, so the connection to the title isn’t as strong as it might be. Beautiful work.
Don’t let the Sun Go Down on Me/Spockling
Love the picture, very strong and simple. What a great catch, getting the rainbow while the sun was shining on the plane. Strong composition, and the wet taxiway with the plane’s reflection is cool. The plane’s too hot, looks like it was overexposed. Great moody, grey skies in the background. Cute song title, I wonder if there might not be one that’s more fitting to the shot, maybe something about a rainbow or rain or the passing of a storm?
Here Comes the Sun/johnnydanger
Really nice sunset, great skies, love the colors. Nice glints of light on the water. Good use of fill flash to get the tree stump exposed. Composition feels ‘almost there’ – that tree stump doesn’t feel quite right, maybe more of it needs to be in the shot? It leaves you sorta torn wondering what the shot’s about – the stump or the sun, because they seem to share in importance. Nice song title, and a sweet exposure. Love those colors.
Lithium Sunset/dugmar
Lovely golden light and a strong composition. You got there at the right time of day! Song title’s a nice fit for the pic. Sure wish those wires weren’t there, they make it seem less like nature. I don’t mind the lens flare. But wouldn’t mind seeing a wee bit more detail in the dark areas, they seem to be very dark indeed. Nice moment to see and grab, very alert!
Elusive Butterfly/tmlphoto
Love this shot, a wonderful combination of colors, and the butterfly seems perfectly placed in your frame, very sharp too. Excellent background blur and the colors really set the butterfly off against its background. The song title’s perfect, too. Excellent image, very nice work.
Child of Mine/davidto
What a cute child and what a great expression. Very sweet, really makes a connection with the child. The bright green along the top is a bit of a distraction. Strong light on her face, but the contrasty light does make it harder to make her dress nice and rich. Adorable girl, your shot really communicates that.
If God Was One of Us/damonff
Inspired pairing of title and image. The extreme pathos of the down-and-outers makes a powerful pairing with the word God. The image absolutely captures the seeming despair of the guys. Very powerful. Strong stuff.
What a Wonderful World/Ginger_55
The song and the lyrics bring reason to the shot. Nice job getting that expression on the guy walking towards the camera. Wouldn’t mind a stronger point of focus in the shot – not quite sure what you want me to look at first. Song lyrics and image do make a strong statement.
Kodachrome/rutt
Well, the title says it all, doesn’t it? Gorgeous, rich colors in the sky, swett composition. Because the foreground doesn’t offer much as a silhouette, wouldn’t mind seeing a bit of detail to add something o that portion of the shot. Spectacular colors.
When the Moon Comes over the Mountain/Pathfinder
What a great idea, lovely moon, surreal combination of moon, clouds and landscape. I’d love to see just a little bit more of the moonshine on the landscape, maybe through a break in the clouds. Very creative, unusual and arresting image.
Strawberry Wine/AltPro
Very provocative photo! Nice work with a model and an excellent match to the song. Strong composition and a nice exposure. I kind of want to see some more of this woman who’s coming back year after year, or at least get some of the emotion/romantic feelings that the song has. Bold, strong, assertive image, totally unambiguous.

nice perspective, and exposure, jwear. i like how i'm led deep into the photo. this would be a spectacular shot with the fall colors, or with some sweet light in any other season. nice entry.
Portfolio • Workshops • Facebook • Twitter
this is a pleasing image, lovely soft colors. i'm finding it too soft for my taste though, wish it was sharper. nice composition.
Portfolio • Workshops • Facebook • Twitter
i like the drama here, lovely depth to the shot. to me, the horizon seems off a few degrees and i struggled with whether this was natural or due to the photographer... and i decided that either way, the photo would be more pleasing if it were rotated to level. i would also have toned down the saturation in the foreground to match that of the rear of the scene - more balanced overall. as you know, i love fog shots and the colors here - wow! -- andy
Portfolio • Workshops • Facebook • Twitter
technically crisp and clear, nice focus, the object i'm presented with is the wine bottle. i think that this image would be greatly improved with a bit more of the surrounding scene included. -- andy
Portfolio • Workshops • Facebook • Twitter
lynn,
a nice exposure here, you caught the "blue hour," good practice for the "after sundown" challenge good job on the exposure, lots of nice detail here and i liked how the pier footings create sort of a maze that keep me occupied. improvement? maybe just a bit wider, but then i don't know what compositional challenges you were faced with . nice work.
Portfolio • Workshops • Facebook • Twitter
rutt, lovely colors in the sky. very very dramatic. silhouetted foreground didn't do much for me, this shot may have been able to be even better taken 15-20 minutes earlier? i find that you can grab the details in the shadows and increase the saturation / colors in the sky with and acheive near-same result while getting more detail in the shadow areas. a nice scene.
Portfolio • Workshops • Facebook • Twitter
great title, great subject you are very lucky to have this animal! i love the back scratching action. my suggestion for improvement would be to go wider, include more of the scene. wide allows me to put the horse in context with the surroundings, and makes the photo less clinical and more artful. make sense?
Portfolio • Workshops • Facebook • Twitter
well, what can i say? a favorite subject, street musician. a favorite genre, street photography. a favorite medium, bw. you packaged it all up for me, and i ate it up. great compostion, lovely in-post work, dramatic sky and subject matter. this one's a fine piece of work, gubbsie.
Portfolio • Workshops • Facebook • Twitter
snappy, this is a wall hanger, for sure. you've gotten some wonderful landscape shots lately, and this in no exception. love the color, composition, subject, details. well done.
Portfolio • Workshops • Facebook • Twitter
spock - a dramatic shot, accentuated by several elements. the rainbow, of course. the rainy tarmac, offering me a chance to appreciate the scene from a diifferent angle. and the subject itself, quite large and dramatic in it's own right. i like the seemingly unrelated juxtaposition of the rainbow and the jet very much. congrats man, this is a grea tphoto.
Portfolio • Workshops • Facebook • Twitter
danger - watch out for unnatural exposure matching. i like the idea you had but i think you took it a bit too far on the tree foreground. maybe fifty percent less would have been right. nice shot, love the colors, ripples, and the sunset.
Portfolio • Workshops • Facebook • Twitter
spend some time on the power line here (clone tool) and crop using the rule of thirds here and you'll have a wonderful image that pleases the eye, and keeps the viewer engaged. otherwise, it's just a pretty sunset.
