Does anybody know what this bird is? I was thinking maybe a Western Wood-Pewee. It does have a slight crest, the coloring looks about right. The location is So. California (San Diego County) and my chart says that the Western Wood-Pewee is found here.

This bird, or one like it, sits on the coping of our pool and occasionally darts out over the water. I think it must be chasing bugs. He/she won't let you get very close, the focal length on the picture was 220mm, and they aren't very big.

My best guess is Great Crested Flycatcher.

When I saw it I thought Pheobe or Flycatcher. Has the shape and markings

Can it be a "Rufous-collared Sparrow"?

    Some more pictures.
    83169701-L-1.jpg
    83169699-L-1.jpg

The Black Phoebe is described thusly
    • Black head, breast, back, wings and tail
    • White belly and undertail coverts
    • Lacks wing bars
This bird doesn’t have that much black and it definitely has wing bars.

Great crested flycatcher Myiarchus crinitus is described as
    • Gray throat and breast
    • Yellow underparts
    • Brownish-olive upperparts
    • Pale wing bars and tertial edges
    • Brown tail with rust edges
    And that doesn’t fit either.

Too dark for a Rufous-collared Sparrow.

The picture on this site is very close, as is the recorded song.
