SpeedTest - see how fast you are to SmugMug

onethumbonethumb Administrators Posts: 1,269 Major grins
edited December 3, 2006 in SmugMug Support
We're working on getting and building some tools for when people (particularly those in the UK, apparently) have speed issues with SmugMug.

To that end, we have an evaluation of a tool up that you can play with. If you've got a minute, give it a whirl and see what you get: SmugMug SpeedTest and choose the San Jose location to test to, from you.

Thanks!

Oh, and FYI, reasonable results can vary a lot depending on what type of connection you have and where you live.

Typical Cable and DSL connections should get anywhere from 1024 kbps and up on Download, and 128kbps or more on Upload. If you're getting anywhere from 256 kbps to 768 kbps Upload you've got a good connection, and anything over that means I wish I lived where you do. :)

Oh, and I'm sorry if you're a modem user, but your speeds will be below 56 kbps both directions.

Oh wow this is the coolest speed test I've seen on-line. On click and it checks em both right away. If it's accurate :D here's my results:
    Last Result:
Download Speed: 574 kbps (71.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 411 kbps (51.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

I've been having major problems with my ISP and the speed dropping out lots the past week so looks as if tonight for the first night in about a week it'f A-Okay. (Last night I had 33kb download... uuugghhhh that was NOT good.)

Ok thanks Don, this is the result for my ISDN in remote Australia. Remote means anyone more than 5km from the nearest town....
Download Speed: 121 kbps (15.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 100 kbps (12.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

I just tested my smugmug gallery, it takes 23 seconds on average for a picture to appear in 'medium' size while scrolling thru my bird gallery. Last night it averaged 13 seconds.
My Zenfolio Gallery takes an average of 1 second to move from picture to picture and the fastest time was .73 of a second hand timed with a stop watch. That is on the same slow ISDN line described above. That is an incredible performance, and an industry benchmark.

A result from the UK. I am still seeing very slow speeds on a regular basis (= nothing at all shown 10 seconds after requesting a page). The response at the moment seems to match the speedtest (very good!)

    Last Result:
Download Speed: 1871 kbps (233.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 218 kbps (27.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

I'll try and run this when things appear slow. How about making this post a sticky?

Download Speed: 1230 kbps (153.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1012 kbps (126.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

Connection type: T1 (shared with a few servers so the outgoing will always be a little bit slower, unless I turn off those servers however that will get a bunch of people mad at me).

P.S. This is the same speed test my ISP uses...

Looks like everyone else in the is still asleep this morning. I'll try again later when all the neighborhood teens are awake and downloading music and movies.

    Papillion, Nebraska, USA
    Cox Cable

    Download Speed: 3089 kbps (386.1 KB/sec transfer rate) thumb.gif
Upload Speed: 495 kbps (61.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

That first test was run around 8 am.

Just for fun, I thought I'd check again. It's about about 3:15 and the Nebraska LA Tech game is on. I'm guessing a few people in the neighborhood are streaming the game.

Download Speed: 1550 kbps (193.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 466 kbps (58.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
    See you later, gs

    That seems reasonably accurate.

A few runs within a couple of minutes, seems to be some variation in the download speed:

Download Speed: 1495 kbps (186.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 249 kbps (31.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

Download Speed: 2895 kbps (361.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 250 kbps (31.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

Download Speed: 2890 kbps (361.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 249 kbps (31.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

Download Speed: 1498 kbps (187.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 249 kbps (31.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

Download Speed: 2921 kbps (365.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 250 kbps (31.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

The only time I remember speed problems was immediately after the recent server move.

Yeah, from my cable company. Slow speeds are probably due to old wiring in my apartment. Still can't complain, it beats the dial-up I lived with for soooo long. :D
