For me in Germany it's less than half of my possible line speed:
Download Speed: 742 kbps (92.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 263 kbps (32.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Using speedtest.net I tried a local server to estimate my real current bandwith:

Still thanks for alreading speeding up the photo browsing noticeably!

At speedtest.net, can you try the San Francisco location and report back?

Ok thanks Don, this is the result for my ISDN in remote Australia. Remote means anyone more than 5km from the nearest town....
Download Speed: 121 kbps (15.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 100 kbps (12.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

I just tested my smugmug gallery, it takes 23 seconds on average for a picture to appear in 'medium' size while scrolling thru my bird gallery. Last night it averaged 13 seconds.
My Zenfolio Gallery takes an average of 1 second to move from picture to picture and the fastest time was .73 of a second hand timed with a stop watch. That is on the same slow ISDN line described above. That is an incredible performance, and an industry benchmark.

Good to see that your performance to us is roughly in line with ISDN. (ISDN is 128kbps both directions, so you're nearly maxxing it out each way to us).

Sucks that it takes forever to load photos, though. That's almost purely a speed-of-light thing because you're both so far away and have such a slow line. We're working hard on this problem, though, and hope to have a solution soon.

I'll try and run this when things appear slow. How about making this post a sticky?

    Gary

Please try again periodically when browsing feels slow so we can see the variance.

Since our servers and network connections don't vary much in terms of load or performance, this suggests some bottleneck between you and SmugMug (and likely outside of both our control, but we'll try to do what we can) is periodically getting overloaded.

430 kbps is actually quite fast, relatively speaking. Most people who pay for 768kbps upstream connectivity are lucky if they get anywhere near 500kbps, which is the range you're in. 256kbps - 300kbps is much more the norm, alas.

mmmm...not nearly as fast as advertised in either direction headscratch.gif

Those seem like very nice numbers to me. (I don't know what they promised you, but this is well above average for broadband in the US).

Hi Gary, could you tell me how long it takes to move from picture to picture while viewing your gallery in 'medium' size please?

    About 2 seconds (this morning!)

    Sure.

    Here's SF:
    43069051.png

    smugmug's test:
Download Speed: 729 kbps (91.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 216 kbps (27 KB/sec transfer rate)

And for comparison again a recent test of the German server:
    43068965.png

Note: This time the test should be more reliable, because I minimized the windows now as soon I had started the test. I'm on a Celeron 300Mhz with 160MB Ram here and the heavy speedtest flash was tearing all the CPU.

Amsterdam is quite a bit closer, yet has half the download speed that i have to Germany...interesting.

The speedtest to SF and smugmug seems to be quite close.

    RCN cable modem "Megamodem 20"

    Smugmug speedtest:
Download Speed: 1708 kbps (213.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1662 kbps (207.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

RCN's speedtest shows 17.5 mb down and 2 mb up, which is more in line with the connection speeds I get to other very well connected sites.
    If not now, when?

Here in the UK I get the following...(Blueyonder Cable connection)

Download Speed: 1298 kbps (162.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 326 kbps (40.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

    and 1 minute later...

Download Speed: 2159 kbps (269.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 322 kbps (40.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

FYI I sometimes find SmugMug very slow and unresponsive but generally it's pretty rapid, and away from my home in places like cafes and at work it often doesn't seem to work at all, or is very very slow.

Medium Picture to Medium Picture: Around 4-5 seconds, just tested this.

Actually the point of this test is help identify why smugmug is so slowww.
I did a test tonight on smugmug, pbase and zenfolio, browsing the galleries in medium at smugmug and zenfolio and large at pbase (medium pbase is very small). times taken to move from pic to pic, browsing in a gallery as follows:

my own zenfolio....1 second (that may sound impossible, but that is what I'm getting using the stock standard Zenfolio interface)

    Pbase......6 seconds

    my own Smugmug..14 seconds
my speed test is just 100k up and down on ISDN.
