    Don

    Don,

I'll try this when I get home this evening.

For what it's worth, when I last had problems a while back. The connection to Smumug was fine for bandwidth (when I pushed it I can get I could get 50Mbps), however exhibited very poor latency. To actually get strong throughput I needed to open a ridiculous number of HTTP connections (like
~25-50). This was causing upload performance using the single-thread Java uploader to be very poor.

Hence the SmugUp project, which I will get round to releasing as soon as I have a minute. By using multiple connection to side-step the latency issue I got nearly an order of magnitude better connection performance.

    Hope this helps,

    Luke

    (long string of cuss words)

I seem to be having major problems with my internet provider this week. That is, when the power is even on (I live in a banana republic).

For my $100/mo subscription fee and with a wireless DSL modem, I have the *blazing* speeds of:

    29 kbps download
    81 kbps upload

At this rate dial-up would be better... except the phone often doesn't work.

    Don,

I'll try this when I get home this evening.

    Connection to San Jose, CA.

    Trial 1:
    1335 kbps down
    2217 kbps up
    Ping 167ms

    Trial 2:
    2104 kbps down
    2335 kbps up
    Ping 155ms

    Contrast with London
    38,023 kbps down
    41,190 kbps up
    Ping 27ms

From the UK's Super-JANET network from Cambridge.

    Hope this helps,

    Luke

To that end, we have an evaluation of a tool up that you can play with. If you've got a minute, give it a whirl and see what you get: SmugMug SpeedTest

    Thanks!

From my home 5x1 cable connection to the SJ server farm:

    Down: 3302 kb/s
    Up: 745 kb/s
    Latency: 75 ms

Which is about on par for what I've seen uploading... about 720 k/s.

And just to gauge how accurate this test is, from here to their twin cities server:

    Down: 4615 kb/s
    Up: 1034 kb/s
    Latency: 32 ms

And to the cable company's test site:
    Down: 4.69 mb/s
    Up: 1.15 mb/s
    Latency: 13.7 ms
