Why is smugmug so slow tonight???

I'm just trying to page through pics in a gallery to edit keywords -- the existing edit-keywords screen shows too small of a view of each pic to see detail. Using the "smugmug small" style. Some pics will never load. Need to kill the load in the browser and hit retry and boom, it loads.

All other web sites work fine from what I can tell.

This happens every so often and is very frustrating. Also, I get feedback from friends to whom I share a gallery link that I should use flickr because it's so much faster.

I'm not sure what to think. Smugmug folks, I know you've added a lot of gear, but at the end of the day, is the consistent performance really there?

Hi Scoo, hmm - it's been zipping along quite fast for me tonight (I'm in NY area). The thing that drives me crazy, is that it could be screaming for most of us, and then reports like yours.

I can ask our guys to look into it - if you can provide a traceroute of you to us, that would be most helpful.

    very slow
    I did a speed test:
    Last Result:
Download Speed: 7165 kbps (895.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1020 kbps (127.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
    log.php?d=7165&u=1020&s=7&c=speakeasy

I updated a gallery customization page and it's taking many minutes after clicking on save. All other areas of the site have the same slow response.

Same here (near Cincinnati, OH) - My speed test was very similar to nonilady's. I uploaded some images this morning and the image, once it started, loaded pretty quick - as I expected. But what I noticed was a rather long delay in-between image uploads. It took sometimes like 20 seconds before it would start loading the next image. Then again, once it started to upload, it was at the speed I expected.

Browsing smugmug in general is very slow this morning. Taking a long time to go between pages (took literally about 30 seconds for the gallery I clicked on to open).

There's definitely something going on...every other site I go to is fast, like CNN, Yahoo, etc.

    Customer availability
I shot a wedding last night and I'm trying to get the proofs up. Later today they will be trying to access them.

Maybe smugmug should split up the pro users onto their own servers? Not sure if this would help. But as pro users most of us are trying to run a business utilizing smugmug as our backend. (great service when we don't have access issues like this) People don't like to wait, especially paying customers and it makes us look bad. Not smugmug because most people don't realize who(smugmug) the backend is.

I offer prints from the wedding through smugmug because usually at weddings people come together that are at a distance to each other. This allows distant relatives to get pictures they otherwise might not get.

When they come to my site and there is no or slow response they may not come back. This will cost both me and smugmug money as they take a percentage of the picture sale. If and when they do come back, slow response will be tied to me and I don't want that word of mouth associated with my business.

Sorry about the rant... I'll cut off my fingers now so they can no longer type!

Same problem from Guernsey Channel Islands UK
I have been having terrible troubles. I think it is a backend server problem because my tracert is fine. Its when I click buttons to do something. Customising Gallery settings Totally locks when clicking save have to try several times. Viewing PNG images no go, transarency lost. Uploading pictures, like another poster 20/30 delay between uploads and when in the galler 5/10 minute (yup you read right) wait while images are processed. I have been about 2hours now trying to make, upload and set a new watermark in png transparent and I am sure I have tried everying this end. Three browsers, IE7, Avant and downloaded and installed Firefox2 same probs with all three

i have the exact problem! , the regular things that i used to do (eg customizing gallery, clicking on save button, make 2nd copy, etc etc ) on smugmug which used to be speedy now is really a pain...what makes it worse is even the smaller size files giving the same problem....

I'm in Chicago, and I can't even get my smugmug page to load (10/29 9:45am CST). smugmug.com loads fine, as does this forum, so I'm guessing they're having database issues.

Same here, took a couple minutes to get just to my home page just now and uploadling Friday and Saturday night was slow as well, with both Send to Smugmug and Starexplorer timing out, ended up having to do it the old fashioned way. I checked my internet connection, and I don't think that's it, I always average 1Mbps up and 5 or so down, plus even ADVRider is zippy.

On my end it seems like the actual uploads themselves are fast, but the confirmation afterwards and the processing of images as well as customizing galleries has been very sluggish.

Very slow for me from Tampa Florida. Uploading slow and processing time once uploaded is slow.

Biggest lag is from finishing uploads to accepted.

Was slow Saturday evening about 8pm and slow again this am about 10am till now noon.
It is the purpose of life that each of us strives to become actually what he is potentially. We should be obsessed with stretching towards that goal through the world we inhabit.

    Oh so slow
Smugmug has been giving me fits here in Washington, DC. Pages are slow to come up or don't come up at all and I've had reports of photos not coming up in slideshows.

Any news from the tech guys yet?

    Crawling
Still rediculously slow here, but seems to be only in my new gallery:

    http://panekfamily.smugmug.com/gallery/2064319

Upload time was maybe a tad slower than usual, but browsing it all day forces me to end the IE process - it just freezes. I don't have the same issue anywhere alse on the Internet. ne_nau.gif

Hi, thing 1 and thing 2 (great shots) came up zippy for me - I'm suspecting Internet weirdness from you to us - it can happen. Have you tried a traceroute, and can you post the results?

I was able to browse the gallery once - after we had been out for several hours earlier today. Most of my other galleries are fine - just a couple in the Family category it seems at the moment are the trouble makers. My motorsports site seems ok, too. Tracert as follows:

The HTML loads quickly now, but the images are still slow in arriving. tracert looks great.

I noticed that when I load a gallery page, the HTML is near instant, and it just sits for awhile waiting for images. Soon enough, all the images load at full speed... It's like the server's having problems finding the images, but then finds them all and sends them without issue.

I am in Ga. and having problems with my backend functions. Painfully slow when trying to browse through the cp and when trying to make adjustments to the pricing settings/bulk customization. I have been having troubles with this since late last night. Not quite as slow tonight but still an issue. :(
