While patiently waiting for Marc's wonder drug Photoshop treatment for landscapes, I reworked another shot from the western trip. I'm trying to apply Marc's notion that one needs to bring down the levels, not raise them.

Here's my original treatment, from last year.

And here's what I did today.

    Did I go too far?

No, I don't think so, Sid.

I think it looks pretty good. That Marc guy, he must know what he's talking about.

Marc should be along any time now, Sid. Don't worry.

Personally, I think you took out a bit too much red. The dirt and rocks in that part of the world have a lot of iron oxide in them... the original treatment showed that, this new one... mmmm... not so much.

    Interesting point, thanks!

Marc posted his secret recipe, BTW, for anyone who wants to try it on their landscapes. Well worth a try. nod.gif

OK, not the Canyonlands, but from the same trip.

    Grand Canyon at dusk.

So last year Patch and I hit the Grand Canyon, Bryce, Moab, Zion.
And I hafta admit, shooting landscapes gave me a headache. For me, it's the hardest kinda of shooting. Not just lighting, but figuring out the best composition.
So I come home pretty disappointed with the quality of my work. And every time I go through it, it's obvious that most of the time, the light isn't very flattering. Midday direct light, that sort of thing. Not a lot of golden hour stuff. Very challenging to post process without blowing stuff out.
Last week I was reading one of Rutt's posts and for a brief moment, actually understood what he was saying. At least, I think I did. It led me to try a separate Curve for exposure, using the Luminosity blend mode. And a separate curve for Color, using the Color blend mode. And I think the results came out rather well for some softball shots.
Then I remembered my lousy landscapes with difficult light, and I figured I should play with my terribly exciting new-to-me technique. Here's an image I simply hadn't been able to figure out. I knew there was something there, but I couldn't make it happen. Finally, I cropped off a big chunk of sky, which that made the flat foreground and deep cleft in the ground jump out.

So here it is, the Green River in the Canyonlands.

Hi ya Sid......... when we were there I was in awe of the depth of these magnificent Canyons and Rock formations eek7.gif
I was in WOW mode most of the time we saw so many beautiful scenes.

I'm glad I got to see all I saw, and this is why I am looking forward to this years Dgrin Shoot in Glacier.

Having already been there, I know how awesome the scenery is,
only this time we will have much more time to go out and shoot it.

Thats one awesome shot you posted, and the others that followed in your thread too clap.gifclap.gif .... Skippy
