The difference between 35mm-format DSLRs and digital MF back just got narrower...like paper-thin. :wowA quick comparison: 1Ds Mk III, 21.1MP $8k, ZD back, 21.5MP, $9k (Plus the ~$4k body). I would say Canon just scared the poo out of all their competition. Nice that they aren't resting on their laurels as market leader, but pushing everyone else this hard.

Now to see what the response is. Good times (at least for we customers). :lurk

Make no mistake, the Canon 1Ds MKIII is a ground-breaking, landmark camera that will have the same impact on the photographic community as the 1Ds MKII had when it was introduced.

The overall shooting performance is just astonishing. If there are no major problems with this camera, it will become the darling of commercial, wedding and portrait photographers the world over.

People will skip meals and new car purchases just to acquire this beast. The obsessive nature of some will require it, because it is the best in its class.

It will be interesting to see how the competitors react, but overall, this is pointing to possibilities I can only imagine.

Finally a whole set of cameras with dust cleaning. Sucks to be eclipse or whoever makes the crap to clean cameras.

You may be suprised to find out that the cleaning mechanism on these bodies really doesn't do much. Ya know... panasonic put it on their bodies so Canon does too.

I use the 85 f/1.8 on 1Ds Mark II plenty. It's a super lens. I'm sure it'd make great images on the 1Ds Mark III, too.

A 20MP full frame sensor has the same resolving power as an 8MP APS-C sensor. How many lenses are worthy of a 30D? It'll certainly stress the corner performance of the wider angle lenses, but other than that, think 30D resolving power with a wider field of view to get the extra pixels.

Re: dust cleaning
Compared to my 300 and XT using same lenses, I've never had to pull out my Giottos to clean dust from my XTi.

The full EXIF shows they shot it with the 85/1.2 II at f/1.8.

This is copied right off the web page--says the 85L. No surprise there.

It's a great shot, but doesn't surprise me. While there's lots more pixels to play with, I'd expect the same quality out of a Mk II. Heck, I'd expect similar quality out of my 20D for that matter.
