Smugmug slow for anybody else?

For me, and several people at my son's new pre-school, SmugMug has been loading really slow for the past week.

Firefox plugin "Load Time Analyzer" measured 60437ms to load less than 84 photos here in "all thumbs": http://gladlee.smugmug.com/gallery/1865178/1/93737739

I'm at work at Palm, Inc., where I believe our outbound connection is through PacBell. Going to speedtest.smugmug.com per SM support's recommendation yielded pretty fast numbers:

> >13446kb/s down
> >12718kb/s up

But this is happening for me at home too, where I'm on Sonic.net DSL:
> 3758kb/s down
> 628kb/s up

The long load times happen on a variety of platforms and machines: OS X 10.4 on a G4 tower, OS X 10.4 on a MacBookPro, Win XP Pro on a Dell Optiplex GX620, WinXP Pro on an IBM Thinkpad, and Ubuntu 7.04 running on a Dell Precision 690.

Perplexing, and frustrating. SM support personnel working from various sites tell me their loadtimes are fast.

The others experiencing slow loadtimes are at KLA-Tencor (connection unknown), and on a Comcast cable modem in Sunnyvale.

Would appreciate if others could run a test and let me know how you're connected and what loadtimes you get for that page.

Thanks!

    slow too
    Daryl,

I've noticed some slowness too this past weekend and today as I have been uploading a bunch of pics and the pages seem to load slow. I use an AT&T DSL connection at home with a Mac G4 Powerbook and same computer at work with a Comcast High Speed connection, same results. When I get I chance I will run some numbers and see. headscratch.gif

    Yes!
Yes, I've seen the same thing. Even the thumbnails load very slow. I have a 100mgb connection at my desktop at work and it loads very slowly from there as well. Somethings going on...ne_nau.gif

Thanks a lot everybody. It's great to know that I'm not alone.

I've been in contact with a number of different Smugmug support staff, and hopefully we'll dig into it a little more thoroughly tomorrow.

    I'll try to keep you posted on anything they find, if they don't beat me to it. :-}

    Hi guys,

We're sorry for any slowness you all have been experiencing. While 99% of our thousands of subscribers, and hundreds of thousands of visitors don't have speed issues, some do occasionally come up.

We typically find that these are individual issues, and usually turn out to be different issues for each person or even area affected. A lot of the time, we find it isolated to an area, or even ISP, but more often we find individual connection issues. ISPs and backbones are constantly changing routing, and one flick of the switch can cause big problems, especially if they send you through an overbooked server, or take you from Detroit, to New York, back to Chicago, then to California, like they do to me all the time. Keep in mind, that in a small area, even though one customer is with SBC/AT&T and the other is with Comcast, they often use the same backbone (Covad is evil?) for the area.

Also, while you can have great speeds, and insane bandwidth, if you're losing packets, it's all for naught. One of our most telling tests to check for this is a line quality test through DSL reports, and trace routes both from you, and to you.

For the line quality test, visit http://www.dslreports.com/linequality You will need to register, but it's free, spam-free, and a highly trusted resource.

For the trace route from SmugMug to you: http://www.smugmug.com/homepage/traceroute.mg
You will see the results on your screen and also receive an email with the results that you can send to us.

Use these instructions for a trace route from your PC to SmugMug: http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/2959046

Use these instructions for a trace route from your Mac to SmugMug: http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/3073291

We would prefer to see these results at help@smugmug.com to protect your IP/location and privacy. These will tell us WHERE the slowdown is happening, and then we'll be better able to determine WHY.

    Who is limelight networks?
After noticing that they are the last link in common between traceroutes from smugmug to my work and home (where connectivity has sucked in the past week), and then after searching the boards here and seeing their name (and llnw) pop-up frequently, I have to ask, who are Limelight Networks?

Is this a fairly new provider to SmugMug?

    Do they kind of... suck?

Magically my SmugMug site is "screaming" this morning. It's actually running faster than it was prior to reporting the slow down issue. :ivar

SmugMug was the only site I was having an issue with so I would question problems with my ISP (Embarq DSL).

Did someone find something and repair the problem? ne_nau.gif

Someone on another site was having trouble viewing SM last night. I don't buy that it is an individual problem because too many people have the problem. I can do speed tests to SM that are soo slow and to other sites it is lightning fast.

    Hi all:

I wish things were running better for me today, but one test page took:

51, 17, and then 43 seconds to load this morning.

My public test page http://gladlee.smugmug.com/gallery/1865178/1/93737739 took 38 seconds to load just now (all thumbs view). That is pretty slow.

This is from home in San Jose, on Sonic.net DSL. I'll be trying from work shortly, were my connection is very very fast.

Not individual, per se, but related to your connection/route to us.

How about a little hot traceroute action?
I have a theory. For me at least, the last hop in common between Smugmug and my home and Smugmug and my work is part of the LLNL network.

If you're having intermittently slow loading of pages, *OR* if they're coming lightning fast, can you do a traceroute using SmugMug's tool?

    http://www.smugmug.com/homepage/traceroute.mg

The first 4 lines of the output should show you how packets from SmugMug are getting to you:

    1 nat1.sv3.smugmug.net (10.27.3.2) 0.148 ms 0.111 ms 0.075 ms
    2 r2.sv1.smugmug.net (63.81.134.2) 1.973 ms 13.582 ms 1.706 ms

Yes please... if you are having problems, please post your traceroutes so we can see what is shared in common. Trying to troubleshoot the problem for a single person is difficult... if we can get more people showing the same issues, it gets easier to track down.
